Hi All

Recently I made a transition from Exchange 2003 to 2007. I still have the Mailboxes on Exchange 2003 apart from one. I wanted to confirm all is well before I move the remaining Mailboxes from 2003 to 2007 and finally decommission 2003.

The problem I have is: The mailbox I moved to Exchange 2007 cannot receive/send Internet Mail. Internal receive/send works well. When I use the tool MAIL FLOW TROUBLESHOOTER in Exchange 2007, I get this error:

Error submitting mail
Mail submission failed: Error message: The SMTP host was not specified

I already checked:
The MX records are fine.
I did the nslookup and the returned details are all correct.
The Internet Connector is fine.
I also ran the policytest.exe

Can anyone assist please.

Hi,

First test if you can access the Exchange 2007 server from the Exchange 2003 server by using telnet:

telnet exchange2007.domain.com 25

If this works then test it vice versa.

Can you send internally from ex03 to ex07 ?

Hi Jveldh,
thanks for your reply.

I successfully accessed Exchange 2007 server through Telnet from Exchange 2003 server and vice versa.

I can't send Internal mail from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007. Does not work vice versa too.

Hi,

Do you have a smarthost configured on the default virtual smtp server? If so remove it and create a seperate smtp connector on Exchange to send mail.

When submitting mails do mails will stay in the queue ?

Hi,
From EMC, Organization configuration/Hub transport/Send Connectors/Internet Connector/Properties/Network
I have the smart host configured.

But on the same window under Source Server tab, I have there the legacy Exchange 2003 configured by default. I can’t remove it and I can’t add the new Exchange 2007 Server. Could this be the cause of the problem?

Hi,

Try to remove the send connector and create a new one. What is configured as the smarthost ? Is there a routinggroup connector between the two environments ?

Regards,

Johan

Hi John,
I removed the connector and configured it again. The smarthost is configured with an IP on Exchange 2007.

The legacy Exchange 2003 is the Default Virtual Server and has the same smarthost IP configured as Exchange 2007.

What could be the problem really? I want to get thi sout of the way.

Regards,
Kisubiboy

Hi,

Can you manually connect to an smtp server outside your organization by using telnet ?

Hi,

If that's the case then a firewall may block the traffic.

Hi John,
The Exchange 2007 IP setting was opened up in the firewall. I can't access Exchange 2007 externally through telnet, the same goes for the legacy Exchange 2003. The legacy receives/sends internal/external mail. But I can successfully ping both externally.

Hi,

What I mean is that you will have to check the firewall configuration on the Exchange servers.

Hi,

This looks ok, is there a firewall between the servers for example a hardware firewall ?
