Event ID : 1221
Description:
The database "First Storage Group\Public Folder Store (PUN-EXCH02-02)" has 2 megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated.

Will event 1221 information 2 megabytes indicate the fragmented space?
Or is whitespace same as fragmented space in the database?

hi,

1221 event id indicate the space which is created after the deletion of mail. this is called as whitespace which is created.

This 1221 is nothing but a online defragmentation which will calculate how much space you can cover after offline defragementation

Inorder to cover the whitespace you need to offline defragmentation.

But, can we call this whitespace as a fragmented space in the database. Actually, I want to know how much my database is fragmented.

No.
White space is space that is available for use by the database. Exchange looks after itself when it comes to the database management and it doesn't really need much maintenance. You do not need to do regular offline defrags (despite what some vendors might say to sell their products) to keep the database working. As long as the online defrag completes successfully and the server is backed up regularly then it will be quite happy.

White Space: Take for instance you have a 5 mb email in your inbox and you deleted it.

Ever wondered what happened to that file ?
If you hit delete button, the file will go sit in the deleted items and then to the dumpster. If you do a shift delete, it will be deleted permanently.

This deleted mail created a white space in your database and it will show up when an online defrag is completed.

the only way to reclaim your white space is a "/d process"

If the requirement is that you want to know the database size, you can actually perform this :
1. In the command prompt, go to the syntax of the BIN Folders.
2. Type in eseutil /ms "Path of the database"
3. This would indicate the absolute size of the database.
