Hi,
I am posting this message in the hope that someone will be able to assist me with an urgent issue which has arisen following moving our MD's mailbox to a second Exchange 2000 Server within the same organisation.
I currently have two Exchange servers running Exchange 2000 Server Enterprise Edition (SP3) within the same Active Directory (Windows 2000 running SP4) forest/Exchange organisation. This has been done, as the first server in the site has experienced a failed disk and I am unable to swap the failed disk. So I built a second Exchange 2000 and I have been moving my user's mailboxes from the failing server to the new server.
Over the last few days I have moved all of my users onto the new server and left the MD's mailbox until last. Following a successful move of the mailbox from the old server to the new server, I have seen the following event logged in the Application log:
Source: MSExchangeIS Mailbox Event ID: 9533
The user account for 'firstname.surname@domainname.com' does not exist in the directory or is not enabled for Exchange mail. The mailbox will be deleted from the mailbox store 'First Storage Group/Mailbox Store (SERVERNAME)' in 30 days
I am at a complete loss to understand what is happening - as I only performed a move of the mailbox between the mailbox store and the server and all of my other users have worked as expected. I have performed a search on the Knowledge Base and I found this support article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303311
But this talks about a mail-enabled contact and not a mail-enabled user. In relation to this user, there are the following factors in play:
a) he is using a Windows XP Media Centre PC which is in a workgroup and not the domain, he logs on using a local account, with the same password as his account on the network - therefore he is seamlessly authenticated
b) his mailbox is nearly 3GB in size
I have a number of different backups of the MD's mailbox in the following forms:
a) an OST of the mailbox in the user profile
b) a number of PST files which are all below 800MB
c) a backup of the mail server, which was done last night and this tape is now on my person at all times!
I have discussed this my boss and we are planning to do the following:
1) edit the e-mail addresses on the MD's current mailbox, so it is different
2) create a new user account with a different RDN in the same OU and mail-enable this account with the existing e-mail addresses
3) Transfer all of the MD's mail and other items from his old mailbox to his newly created mailbox
4) Then delete the old mailbox and let it be removed from the mailbox store
If anybody is able to assist with this issue, I would be extremely grateful - as I have been up for over two days, trying to secure the mail server.
Many thanks,
Neil

If you want to go down that path then you can exmerge the mailbox out to PST file. You will need to select a set of date ranges as the mailbox is too big for one PST. Think about folders or years to break them up into sensible sections. Then mail disable the account, remove the exchange attributes. Wait a while and then run the cleanup agent to purge out the mailbox. You may then recreate the mail account which will add the addresses back in. Exmerge the data back in once you're sure it's all working ok. Do some test mails in and out before you spend any time bringing mail in and out.
