We have recently migrated to Exchange 2000 from 5.5 and after we moved the mailboxes we had left the 5.5 server running for a little while to make sure that everyone had connected and as a result were pointed to the new server.

So we decided to finally remove the Exchange 5.5 server. I uninstalled the 5.5 server and removed the Active Directory Connector but now I am getting the 9318 error below every 10 minutes in the application log of the Exchange 2000 server.

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: MSExchangeMTA
Event Category: Interface
Event ID: 9318

Description:
An RPC communications error occurred. Unable to bind over RPC. Locality Table (LTAB) index: 23, Windows 2000/MTA error code: 1722. Comms error 1722, Bind error 0, Remote Server Name (Old Exchange 5.5 Server) [MAIN BASE 1 500 %10] (14)

For more information, click http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.

I have finally been able to remove the Exchange 5.5 server from 5.5 System Manager but My Exchange 2000 server is still trying to replicate with it every 10 minutes.

So every 10 minutes I get the error you saw above.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

I was able to fix some of the problems with some help.

I was able to remove the reference to the Exchange 5.5 server from the Exchange 2000 System Manager. I went into Active Directory Sites And Services and went to the View menu and chose "Show Services Node". Once I did that a services folder appeared. When I drilled down into it I found a Microsoft Exchange Tree. Expanding the tree further I was able to find that my old Exchange 5.5 server was still referenced under "Servers". All I had to do was select the old server and delete it. After everything replicated the Old server no longer showed up in System Manager on the Exchange 2000 machine.

However, after high fives and dancing about like fools we realized that we were still recieving the RPC error that I refered to in earlier post on a regular 10 minute schedule. To this I say Arrghh!

A kind fellow named Bart suggested via an e-mail that I should turn on diagnostic logging for the MTA. After doing that I recieved some more info events and a few more warning events that may be helpful. I will paste the new events below. I these events the new server name is E2KMAIL and the old server name is EXMAIL.

There are 4 information events and 3 Warning events. I will paste the information events in first. I know this will be a bit long but please bear with me;

There they are. What I want to know is where is EXMAIL being refereced? I checked again in Active Directory Sites And Services but there is nothing else in there. I also looked for any references to EXMAIL in ADSI edit and found none. If you have gotten this far, Thanks so much for taking the time to try and help.

Paul

I have just finished migrating from Exch 5.5 tp Exch 2003 and I am now getting this same problem. In the event log I get

Source: MSExchangeMTA
Event ID: 9318

An RPC communications error occurred. Unable to bind over RPC. Locality Table (LTAB) index: 197, Windows 2000/MTA error code: 1753. Comms error 1753, Bind error 0, Remote Server Name XXXXXXX [MAIN BASE 1 500 %10] (14)

The remote server name XXXXXXX refers to the old 5.5 server. I have removed the DC connectors to it, deleted it from Exch 2003 System manager but these MTA errors are occurring every 10 minutes.

If anyone has a way of resolving this I'd be mush obliged.

You need to remove the SRS object from Exchange Manager and stop the SRS Service on the Exch 2000 server (disable it). Then restart the MTA Stacks service on the Exchange server.

Has anyone did what pjhutch suggested? I am having exactly the same message... Exch5.5 server was removed and now only 2003 is working, never had a problem with email but this event messages are really annoying. If i'm going to follow Hawkin's stepe on how he removed the server from the "sites & Services", would it give me a good result?

Please help.....

I was in the same situation - removed my last EX 5.5 server and I was seeing this on my clustered mailbox server and my frontend server. Restarting the MTA Stacks service, or in the case of the cluster I took the Exchange Message Transfer Agent Instance offline and returned it to online without a inciting a fail-over to the passive node.

Just to add on MTA service is not required if you do not have Exchange 5.5 as in E2k its been taken over by SMTP service.

If this is the case go ahead and disabled the MTA service

Hi, i am getting the same error message, i did what pjhutch said stopping srs and re starting mta stack, but that has now resulted in event id 8026
LDAP Bind was unsuccessful on directory synexchange.synlog.co.uk for distinguished name 'synlog\administrator'. Directory returned error:[0x51] Server Down. (Connection Agreement 'Users: synlog.co.uk - SYNLOG\Synergy Logistics Ltd.' #3316) and thats happening very often now.

Any ideas or pointers most welcome.

Hi everyone,

In my case -- 5.5 to 2003 migration and 5.5 finally removed according to the guides I noticed the same MTA error logged into application log of the 2003 server every 10 minutes exactly. During prior tests, when one will turn OFF 5.5 for a day just to see what happens I noticed the same error but back in those days I had x400 queues on the 2003 and those were slowly filling with replication messages. After removing the 5.5 from the sites I no longer had queueus for the old 5.5 server yet I still had the MTA log that error.

The solution proposed here, specifically:

pjhutch
You need to remove the SRS object from Exchange Manager and stop the SRS Service on the Exch 2000 server (disable it). Then restart the MTA Stacks service on the Exchange server.

Did resolve the issue. Recall that the fact of removing the SRS using system manager 'magically' also removes the Config_CA agreement from your ADC services regardless of where ADC is running (meaning which machine it has been installed on, does not have to be the new 2003 server at all, in fact MS says to put in on a DC but a member server will do too) - in my case it was running on a totally different server, far away from the whole 55-2003 migration geographically speaking so ADC and the SRS 2003 server talk... Anyway the reference to the old server name must have been embedded into the ADC Config_CA agreement because after removing SRS and restarting MTA Stacks on the 2003 server the error was no longer logged into the application event log of the 2003 server.

Now we can convert to native mode :)

Cheers,
~B
