Hello,
We are running Exchange 2003 on a Windows 2003 server. For backup, we are using NTBACKUP, which should work for this setup. However, after a few minutes (usually less than 2 minutes), I get an error in the Event Viewer. The error says: --- Event Type: Error Event Source: ESENT Event Category: Logging/Recovery Event ID: 215 Date: 13-06-2005 Time: 23:01:52 User: N/A Computer: MP-SERVER1 Description: certsrv.exe (2028) The backup has been stopped because it was halted by the client or the connection with the client failed.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. ---
Naturally, the Microsoft link tells me nothing :-) But I have found this article about the error: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;830575 - but this is about Small Business Server and SQL, my server is running Windows 2003 and has no SQL connections at all.
In the backup log, it says backup completed successfully, but when I expand the Information Store on the tape, there are no data...
Any suggestions to how I can fix this?
Please let me know if you need further information.
Regards, Simon

We have the exact same issue. Instead of "certsrv.exe (2028)" we get "certsrv.exe (352)" in the Event Viewer.
We have installed an Enterprice CA on our 2003 SBS for OWA SSL security. We get the error on every daily backup. We get it with or without Certificate Services running.
NTBACKUP is configured to backup C: and D:, system state, and the Exchange Store all in one backup job to a file on an external USB hard dirve. The Exchange Store is backed up properly without the event error if it is backed up by itself to a file.
The expanded Information Store is blank in the media catalog showing "no entries found" with either method of backing up the Exchange store. I have assumed the "no entries found" is normal and believe the store is backed up even with the event error.
I have assumed the Certificate Services data may not be backed up.
I would appreciate it also if someone can help resolve this one and only unresolved error we get consistently in the SBS 2003 event logs.
Thanks,
Rich

I want to add that I have run "regsvr32 C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\COM\sqlvdi.dll" several times over a period of several months without success.

I meant to type "regsvr32 C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\sqlvdi.dll" without COM in the path.
Some articles point to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\COM but sqlvdi.dll is in the first path on our server.

Well, nice to hear that I am not the only one with this problem. However, it seems that noone has any ideas on how to fix it.
The difference between your system and mine, is you're running SBS and I am running a "normal" Windows 2003 environment...
Hope that somebody can help us :-)

The KB 810333 mentions possible problems with hard drive, 3rd party backup software, and corrupt database.
I installed 2003 SBS on a test server and get the same error. The test server is a old 733 eMachine and the production a Dell 400 SC.
We are using NTBackup so no 3rd party backup software
I don't think it is a hard drive problem, though I do get the following event warning on both servers during startup:
"The data buffer created for the "MSExchangeIS" service in the "C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin\mdbperf.dll" library is not aligned on an 8-byte boundary. This may cause problems for applications that are trying to read the performance data buffer. Contact the manufacturer of this library or service to have this problem corrected or to get a newer version of this library."
The exchange store on both servers seems to be in order. I have tested the store backups on both servers and they are successful and can be restored to a Recovery Storage Group on both servers and exmerge will extract the mailboxes to pst files on both servers.

I am having the same problem although my backup details in the event log show a successful backup and so does the log file. It appears that the backup is completing successfully even though the error still occurs:
certsrv.exe (1024) The backup has been stopped because it was halted by the client or the connection with the client failed.
