I have Exchange 2003 on Win SBS 2003 ... Having a really tough time trying to get my old MDBDATA files to work on this new installation.

I have been searching for 2 days now without a solution.

http://forums.msexchange.org/m_210040000/tm.htm
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;273642
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/264413

And tons of others, but no reason to keep going.

What I've done so far:

- Fresh install of Win SBS 2003 & Exchange 2003 (no errors)
- Set up all users (only 5 currently) same way as old exchange server. (same domain name and all)
- Copied the MDBDATA from the old server hdd to the new install. (hardware replaced, unexpectedly wouldn't boot)
- Stopped exchange store service
- Renamed "MDBDATA" to "MDBDATA.fresh".  Created new "MDBDATA" dir.  Copied old MDBDATA files to new MDBDATA dir.
- Ran "eseutil /p priv1.edb" then "eseutil /d priv1.edb" (it was not in proper shutdown state)
- Renamed "MDBDATA" to "MDBDATA.repaired".  Renamed "MDBDATA.fresh" to "MDBDATA".
- Started exchange store services, and made sure everything is still working properly. (everything ok)
- Stopped exchange store service.
- Created a Recovery Storage Group with default settings and files.
- Copieded my repaired files from "MDBDATA.repaired" to "Recovery Storage Group" folder.
- Renamed "Mailbox Store (SERVER).edb" to "Mailbox Store (SERVER).edb.orig"
- Renamed "Mailbox Store (SERVER).stm" to "Mailbox Store (SERVER).stm.orig"
- Renamed "priv1.edb" to "Mailbox Store (SERVER).edb"
- Renamed "priv1.stm" to "Mailbox Store (SERVER).stm"
- Started exchange store service.
- Mounted the "Mailbox Store (SERVER)" in the Recovery Storage Group. (Success)
- Changed Administrator security to have Receive As and Send As permissions on.
- Attempted to use the Exchange Tasks menu to Recover Mailbox Data... error:

"The attempt to log on to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer has failed. The MAPI provider failed. Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store ID no: 8004011d-0512-00000000"

  - Attempted to use ExMerge as well... I get 2 things happening with this:

ExMerge (Dialog Window)
An error was encountered with one or more users when retrieving the list of mailboxes homed in the selected databases on server 'SERVER'. Please refer to the log file, 'ExMerge.log', for more information.

ExMerge.log :
[20:54:52] Found 0 mailbox(es) homed on database 'RECOVERY STORAGE GROUP/MAILBOX STORE (SERVER)'.
[20:54:52] Skipped 5 mailbox(es) homed on database 'RECOVERY STORAGE GROUP/MAILBOX STORE (SERVER)' because of errors.
[20:54:52] Ignored 3 mailbox(es) homed on database 'RECOVERY STORAGE GROUP/MAILBOX STORE (SERVER)'.
[20:54:52] Found 0 mailbox(es) homed on the specified databases.
[20:54:52] Skipped 5 mailbox(es) homed on the specified databases because of errors.
[20:54:52] Ignored 3 mailbox(es) homed on the specified databases.

- However, If I hit OK on the dialog box and go BACK, then select FIRST STORAGE GROUP instead of RECOVERY STORAGE GROUP ... it will show me all the mailboxes (fresh installed ones) , once I do that, I go back again, choose RECOVERY STORAGE GROUP and this time when I hit next, it will give me the list of the mailboxes (which is strange, but oh well).  Thought it would go now that I can see the mailboxes, but nope.  Heres what was in the log this time:

ExMerge.log :
[21:01:05] Copying data from mailbox 'Full Name' ('USER') on Server 'SERVER' to file 'C:\USER.PST'.
[21:01:05] Error opening message store (MSEMS). Verify that the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service is running and that you have the correct permissions to log on. (0x8004011d)
[21:01:05] Errors encountered. Copy process aborted for mailbox 'Full Name' ('USER').
[21:01:05] Number of items copied from the source store for all mailboxes processed: 0
[21:01:05] Total number of folders processed in the source store: 0
[21:01:05] 0 mailboxes successfully processed. 1 mailboxes were not successfully processed. 0 non-fatal errors encountered.
[21:01:05] Process completion time: 00:00:00

Now I'm not sure about anybody else... but this is really starting to become a real nightmare.  If anybody could give me any assistance at all, it would be much appreciated (as this business has been down now 4 days).

Thanks in Advance,

I have the same error message when i purge a mailbox and i try to recover. Following the message from event viewer:

=====================================
Event id: 1041
Unable to recover mailbox '-----------'.
Error: The attempt to log on to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer has failed.
The MAPI provider failed.
Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store
ID no: 8004011d-0512-00000000.
=====================================
Solution:
-we can't use the recovery storage group to recover or restore a mailbox if it purged or if the retention period has passed (30 days), following the resolution steps:
1-create a recovery storage group
2-add the database(which include the mailbox before purged) to this recovery storage group.
3-Restore the database from backup
4-dismount the database if its mount
5- Create a new Storage Group and Database ensuring that the file names for the new database are identicle to those of the database in the recovery storage group. Then dismount the database.
6- Copy the .stm and .edb files from the recovery storage group location to the path of the new database.
7- In the properties of the new database place a check mark next to the box (this database can be over written by a restore).
8- Mount the database, connect mailbox to a user account, Exmerge the data out of the recovered mailbox and into the new mailbox.
