We have a Windows 2000 Domain with 2 DCs and a Win 2000/Exchange 2000 member server. Want to in-place upgrade the Exchange server to Win 2003 and Exch 2003, but leave the DCs at Win 2000 .Read the excellent article here from Henrik Walther (http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Upgrade_Exchange_2000_to_2003.html)

Only thing that's unclear - Are there any issues specific to upgrading the Exchange server to Win/Exchange 2003, but leaving the domain at 2000?

TIA

Al

One more point -  The current Exchange 2000 server is Standard edition. The 2003 Exchange will be Enterprise Edition. Any additional issues with that?

Thanks again,

Al

No there shouldn't be any issues, you can just go ahead.

I just noticed your instructions assume Exchange 2000 is in native mode. What if it is currently running in Mixed mode. There was a previous Exch 2000 install on the same server. For a year, they dumped Exchange, but then came back to it with a new install on the same server. However, the initial install does still show up in the server list, but it is no longer used. Should I just switch to native mode before doing the upgrades? If so, can it be done when Exchange is "live"?

Yes it would be a good idea to switch to native mode first, and yes you can do this while the server is "live".

Henrik is our man here... just go ahead and run the setup....

You need to consider certian steps only if you wanna introduce a w2k3 dc and E2k3.

As it is windows 2000 SP4 works great with exchange 2003 and ofcourse windows 2003 with exchabnge 2003 is better.

Thanks for all the help guys -

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) I will no longer be doing this as an in-place upgrade. They are now going to buy a whole new server to replace the existing one, so I will be doing a migrationm instead. I assume there are good articles here on that as well, so I'll be checking. I also plan to recycle the present server and use it to run ISA server, as they want to implement RPC over HTTP and also Active Sync for users outside of the office. I've never done any of this before, so I'll be doing lots of research again.  My Exchangte tech left the company, so I am filling in on an emergency basis. Believe it or not, I can troubleshoot existing Exchange installations rather well, but just have never been involved in an actual installation. I guess I'll be learning soon enough.

Thanks for taking the time to help out!
