Hi :
I am facing a particular problem with logfiles. I see a 10 to 20 (5120KB) logfiles being created in mdbdata every minute. This happens almost every Sunday. The log file creation continued even after I stopped smtp and other virtual servers, stopped mta stacks service. I stopped most of the exchange services except Information store. After I restared the information store the log file creation stopped.
I have to do a full backup to release the space again.
I updated exchange to latest patches.
Any ideas.. thanks in advance...
Dhar.

We have this setup running for almost 2 years. I have NAV for exchange and NAV corporate edition installed on this server. But this problem started about 4 weeks ago.

I've seen Nav remove it's exclusions when the Software updates.. you might want to double check to ensure that everything to do with exchange, the M: and the INETSRV directories are all excluded. If everything is excluded, try running an ISINEG -s <servername> -fix -test alltests and do each of the stores. If there are any errors or fixes in any of the tests, then run it again until you either get all zeros or the same totals twice.

Let me know if you figure out what this is, I'm having the same issue. 9GB of log files yesterday in an environment that has been in the same state for 2 years. No Enterouge either.

I did further research and I observed that the log files are getting created even when smtp/pop3/http/imap all these service were stopped. I stopped all the exchange services except Information store. I even disconnected the server from internet.
The creation of log files stopped after I restarted the Information store. This is problem starting exactly every sunday 1.40AM.
Is this exactly the same problem for you too?
Any clues will be highly appreciated.
thanks Dhar

Hey guys,
Here is the solution for a lot of you. Its a little messy, but it works and keeps the logs to a minimum
Exchange 5.5 Exchange's circular logging option must be enabled for the Directory Service and Information Store database files.
To enable circular logging via Exchange Administrator In the Exchange Administrator, navigate to the server (expand the Site, expand the Configuration container, and then expand the Servers container).
Click the server's name to select the server.
Click File then Properties. The Properties dialog box for the selected server opens.
Click the Advanced tab.
In the Database Circular Logging group, look at the Directory and Information Store checkboxes.
Select both of these checkboxes to enable circular logging.
If these checkboxes are already both checked, then circular logging is already enabled.
Click OK.
Restart the Exchange Information Store and Directory.
Exchange 2000/2003 Since each individual message store within an Information Storage group shares the same set of transaction logs, each individual message store is affected by enabling circular logging for that storage group.
Circular logging is disabled by default in Exchange 2000/2003. You must manually enable circular logging.
you must set these options through the Exchange System Manager. Next to Storage Groups, click Prev or Next to move through the available information storage group until the Name field specifies the desired group.
The Enable circular logging checkbox indicates whether circular logging is enabled. Select or clear the checkbox to enable or disable circular logging for the storage group.
To enable circular logging via Exchange System Manager In Exchange System Manager, navigate to the Exchange 2000/2003 Server and select the Information Storage group for which you want to enable circular logging.
Right-click on the selected storage group and click Properties on the shortcut menu.
On the Properties dialog box's General tab, select the Enable circular logging checkbox.
Repeat steps for each Information Storage group.

Circular Logging - There's only one problem with that... and it's a big one. If you enable Circular logging, you may be eliminating the problem of swelling log files, but you are putting your Exchange stores into dire straits. If the Exchange stores experience a large disaster, the Exchange server replays all the logs, and performs an automatic "Soft Recovery" of the Exchange stores. This can only occur is the Exchange logs are present. If Circular logging is enabled, those critical log files are overwritten to save hardrive space, thus exposing your information stores to disaster. Cicular logging sacrifices Disaster recovery, for a short-term HD space fix.

Guys, It seems I have a similar problem to yourselves. My logs are going nuts too and of course filling the log partition. I couldn't agree more with dtraverso, circular logging is a short term fix and does comprise your restore process. I also don't recommend circular logging. If anyone is having this issue, have a look at your Queues and look for any unusual mail passing through your SMTP, I'm seeing lots X400 mail going through the SMTP that seems to originate from the server using a fake address within my domain. I'm guessing I've got some type of virus. I'm yet to look into further though. If anyone has a similar issue with numerous fake x400 mail, please let me know and we'll work on this issue together. Thanks
