Does anyone know or have installed Exchange 2000 on a Windows 2003 Member Server?

Is there compatability issues with AD and the Schema since 2003 AD schema is different then 2000 AD schema?

Here is an article on Computer Weekly that also confirms it won't work, along with many other key apps.

A cynical person would think that this was a ploy by Microsoft to get everyone to spend lots of money on product upgrades. A cynical person, that is... [Smile]

I have just installed Exchange2K on windows 2003 server, works good, no probs encountered, sending and receiving e-mails fine externally as well as internally. I went to MS exchange site you have to SP3 installed for exchange 2k and active directories running on windows 2003 server. If you don't install SP3, windows 2003 disables exchange. Tip don't install the Windows 2003 Mail server POP3 services it stuffs up exchange, then you have to reinstall exchange.

I've been thinking about trying this, but don't want to mess with my production Server 2003 box. Can you provide any details of your install?

I was pretty dissapointed that Exchange Server 2000 wasn't going to install on Server 2003.

Well if you already have win2003 server installed, check the DNS and active directories services are running as per normal, uninstall the win2003 mail server i.e the pop3 services if it was installed, then make sure nntp and smtp services are installed, download SP3 for exchange 2K, then install exchange 2k , ignore popup warnings and finish install then install the SP3 then restart win2003 server, now you should be ready to setup exchange as you would on a Win2K server, also check that all the exchange services are started.

I don't recommend installing Exchange 2K on windows 2003 server on a network that is critical for exchange services, if you are going to try it on a real work environment make sure you have a backup exchange server (we do!) and the time to implement it (basically client reconfiguration) or you could have an exchange replicator installed.

Thanks, I wasn't so worried about what Microsoft officially supports, and it's just a small network where they don't want to dedicate another box for exchange usage. I'll test it in a lab setting when I get a chance.

Thanks.
