Hi everyone,

I have an exchange server 2003 and doesn't have "Internet mail setup yet" Before I enable it, I have questions that I know you all can answer. My internal domain name is different from my rigestered domain name. for example.

test.local = internal domain name
prod.org = registered domain name.

What are the proper steps to get it to work so when I enable intrnet mail, All email from jdoe@prod.org will be routed to my exchange server.

This is what i have setup right now.
1: Created an MX record on my registered domain and pointed to my public IP
2: Opened a port on the firewall to route port 25 to the internal exchange server
3: created an MX record in my internal DNS which is "test.local"

Really the question is Do i need to create another domain name in my internal DNS server and name it "prod.org" so the email will route properly?

Thank you all in advance...

Jeff

Your internal DNS has nothing to do with Exchange. Exchange doesn't use it.
For Exchange 2003 to accept an email address the domain must be listed in recipient policies. Therefore after making the public DNS changes you would add the domain to recipient policies and then ensure that the user accounts have the required email addresses.

DO NOT remove the .local domain from recipient policies, as that will cause internal problems. However the public domain can (and should) be the default domain.

Simon.
