Exchange 2003 Front End and Exchange 2000 Back End - 12.Aug.2003 5:06:00 PM

Can an Exchange 2003 server set up with OWA work as a front end server to an Exchange 2000 back end server? My instinct would be "yes", but I'd like to be more certain. Has anyone tried this? Does it work?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

There's a thread on microsoft.public.exchange.design that suggests it can be done.
"If your front end is 2003 and the backend is 2000, your users will see the 2000 OWA interface. In order to take advantage of the new features in 2003 OWA, both servers need to be at 2003."

I have this set-up in a lab enviroment and it works well. I have an Ex2003 front-end and the back-ends are Ex2000 and Ex2003. Webmail works fine with user accounts on either server, the only difference is the interface the user sees which is determined by the back-end server.
Hope this helps.

Thank you for your answers, MidwestAdmin and Chris Gagne.
I would have never guessed that the back-end server would influence the user's experience at their browser, since the ASP elements are coming from the front-end OWA server to the client's browser. Since there's no direct interaction between the back-end server and the user, it isn't obvious that the back-end server would make a difference.
Thanks again for your quick and focused answers.

hello
I had the same question about the FE/BE upgrade rollout ; I looks safe to upgrade only the FE machines, but where are the benefits??
I'm really want to have the session timeout feature of OWA2003 (and I don't want to upgrade tonight my brand new BE E2k cluster...)
So do you think that it's to possible to implement timeout by ugrading only FrontEnd nodes?
thanks
