Please explain where you are getting your information about the number of messages waiting.  I know of no such status in the mailboxes area.

The total items count has no direct correlation with the number of waiting messages.  Every message, calendar item, note, task, contact, etc., are all included.

Changing the MX record changes where the messages from the outside are sent.  It can make a difference depending upon what it was pointing to before, and what it points to now.

I am not following what you mean about this.  Unless your DNS server acts as the authority for your domain, changing MX information there should make no difference.  Typically your public DNS is hosted by your ISP or by an outside service.  Changing MX information there makes a difference.

An MX record associates a value (indicating priority if you have more than one MX record) with a FQDN.  An "A" record associates a FQDN with an IP address.
