I currently have a production exchange 2007 SP1 server with all the roles installed on it (mb,hub, cas) and i would like to move the CAS role off as our OWA/EAS is getting pretty intense.   Could i just install a new CAS role into production then migrate everyone over on a weekend?  or can I not run both roles at the same time?

Thanks!

Is this the correct order to complete this task?

1. install new Exchange 2007 server with CAS role (server 2008)
2. configure IIS on new CAS box
3. poing ISA 2006 to new server for EAS & OWA
4. verify new server is working properly
5. uninstall CAS role off Exchange 2007 (mb,ht) server

Is there anything I need to do for file migration?  Free/Busy?  OAB?
can this be done during business hours? (besides the ISA work of course)

Should be just that simple, actually. And, if you are planning on using the same URL to access OWA, you can export your current cert from your existing CAS and import it into the new server.

That sounds like a good plan.  If you are indeed planning to use the same FQDN, make sure you export your certificate with its private key and import on new server.  And don't forget to configure things like the Autodiscover, Web service URLs, etc...

thanks guys!  Unfortunetly it will not be the same FQDN as the main server will still be intact.  So I will have to create a new SAN cert.  Anyone have experience with doing this?  I only had OWA going before but now I want to do Outlook RPC which needs Autodiscover.

Thanks

Have a look at my following blog post if you'd like to learn more about SAN certs:
