Hi Experts,

I don't know where to start, I just want to throw the darn exchange server out of the window.

The information store won't start but before I get to that, I have these issues going on:-

1.

Basically you will notice that the NIC is showing as disconnected and the initial start up wizard and server manager wizard just hang. If I take the network lead out and reboot it and logon, it solves this hanging problem  - but guys this isn't really a solution :)

The event viewer is showing 3 repeated errors:-

1.

2.

3

DNS seems to be fine, I've also created a site for my AD site. I've also removed the exchange server from the domain and then rejoined it. I've also gone to the default domain controller security policy (which is within the default domain GP) and added the exchange org group to the manage auditing and something else policy which was suggested from one site.

I haven't a clue what to do really and would be grateful for any help to resolve this issue. I really don't understand why it is hanging on the login, that is so so annoying. When I removed this machine from the domain, it didn't do it. As soon as I joined it back to the domain, it is doing it again so something werid is going on.

Thanks for help - this is fairly urgent :-)

Well, Windows 2008 can be pants at showing a correct status there so it's not a bandwagon to jump on straight away. Set a ping with the -t going from somewhere to the server IP and see when it starts responding. Ideally is should start responding to a ping a while before the GINA comes up. If not, then troubleshoot the box, not the Exchange application.

Dear Mark,

Thank's for your reply, after writing my post, I remoted back onto  work and ironically my Exchange Server let me remote on to it - basically it told me that the 'Network Access Protection Agent' hadn't started, I went to services and noticed it was set to Manual so have started it and have set it to Automatic.

The next thing I have done, is run dcdiag and this is the results:-

I have also just pinged both my my DCs via the FQDN and I get a reply from both of them fine. I've also pinged the internal domain name and I also get a reply fine but I still have my issues.

What would you suggest I do next?

Cheers

Set all the Exchange services to manual and reboot the box. If you have the same symptoms then you've got a configuration problem that a Windows forum will help you with. (A pint says you do)
Possible is that you have NIC issues. I'm sure you've checked already but make sure the sensing is saying the same on the switch and server (lock both up at 100/1000 Full or whatever)

Have you not got any ideas what it is at all? even if it is a windows issue? My information store won't start and I can't seem to get rid of those errors.

I stopped all the exchange services, set them to manual, rebooted the machine and it came up ok, no hanging like before on the initial startup page, so do u think the issue is with exchange or windows?

I'm guessing exchange.

I've got this error in event viewer:- Event ID 2114 but no others really

Process MSEXCHANGEADTOPOLOGYSERVICE.EXE (PID=1392). Topology discovery failed, error 0x80040a02 (DSC_E_NO_SUITABLE_CDC). Look up the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) error code specified in the event description. To do this, use Microsoft Knowledge Base article 218185, "Microsoft LDAP Error Codes." Use the information in that article to learn more about the cause and resolution to this error. Use the Ping or PathPing command-line tools to test network connectivity to local domain controllers.

2114 has a bucket load of possibles. There's the issue of your AD Sites and Services. Have you assigned a subnet to your site and is the Exchange 2007 server in the right subnet?

From the additional diags you've got some Exchange related issue but you need to check your AD sites/subnets config and DNS is solid and configured properly before we go further.

Hi,

I have assigned a subnet to the default site which both my DC's are in.

My exchange server is in the same subnet.

DC-01 = 192.168.254.40
DC-02 = 192.168.254.41
MS-01 = 192.168.254.44
MS-02 = 192.168.254.45

DNS seems fine to me, both servers are registered in DNS and I can ping everything via the FQDN names.

If you can recommend any specific tasks then please do and I will do them as I'm depserate to get this issue resolved.

Cheers

I cleared the logs and rebooted it and had a few other event messages which might be helpful in terms of diagnosing the problem:-

Source MSExchange ADAccess Event ID 2601

Process MSEXCHANGEADTOPOLOGY (PID=1400). When initializing a remote procedure call (RPC) to the Microsoft Exchange Active Directory Topology service, Exchange could not retrieve the SID for account <WKGUID=DC1301662F547445B9C490A52961F8FC,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,...> - Error code=80040a01.
The Microsoft Exchange Active Directory Topology service will continue starting with limited permissions.

Thanks again

What's this MS-02? What's the deal with that? Have you confirmed every single network setting is absolutley the same between MS-01 and MS-02?

MS-02 is hopefully going to be used for SCR. It is identical hardware to MS-01 and I believe it has the same setup. It was working at one point, it has all off a sudden stopped working.

Basically I installed Exchange on MS-01 first and got e-mail working on it, and then I just simply installed exchange on MS-02 with the same roles as MS-01 (Hub transport, client access & Mailbox role)

Is there anything in particular you would like me to check or do?

Cheers

02 "stopped working"?
At this point I'd engage a consultant or reseller to take a look at your infrastrucuture.
There's only so much we can do over forums especially when you didn't mention that 02 was working and now isn't.

I'd uninstall 02, format it and rebuild it with the same name. Do it in stages so you can see what's going on. Only do this after you're totally sure AD is right. If 02 has problems you know it's going to be hardware or AD. Once 02 is ok do the same with 01.

Doing all this on 2008 probably wasn't the best plan for you based on your Exchange experience. I know it's the latest, greatest and all but it's a helluva shift from W2K3.

I assume you followed Nathan's article from this website to install E2k7 on W2K8?

Well MS-01 is the main server if that one is down then MS-02 will not work in that it can't connect to the mailboxes for users.

They both have the same errors so maybe it is to do with something in AD?

I didn't follow a guide no, but if you have the link I will take a look.

I would have thought that installing Exchange 2007 on Server 2008 would be more stable and better than installing it on w2k3? Exchange 2007 was built and designed for Server 2008 initially so why would I want to put Exchange on a 2k3 server? is that not a step backwards?

Cheers

The problem is that you're drip-feeding information here. You didn't mention 02 at first, then you said it's not working. Then you said what you did in your first sentence etc.

W2K8 is the way forward but you're clearly having some issues with it and W2K3 is far less complex, hence my suggestion.

As for a link: http://www.msexchange.org/articles_tutorials/exchange-server-2007/migration-deployment/installing-exchange-2007-windows-server-2008.html is the article you need.

Get a consultant in to check everything in your AD. All this drip-feeding information to me isn't helping you.

I don't have any more information I can give you? I'm not drip-feeding information. I didn't mention MS-02 at the beginning as I didn't think it was relevent, but if it is then my apologies!

I've shared everything else and I've even given you screen shots and uploaded a dcdiag report, i've confirmed that the exchange server(s) are in the same subnet as my DCs and in site's and servers I have assigned the subnet to my default site.

I believe DNS is working fine, and group policies seem to be working fine for the user accounts I'm working with - this wouldn't work if DNS was an issue.

Everything seems fine apart from exchange - the whole point of me coming here is to try and learn myself and try and fix it myself, I don't want to get in consultants, I would just start again if I really have to but it would be great if someone could help me try and fix the problem.

Cheers

Your best course of action is to flatten 02 (since it's your intended SCR target) and rebuild it. (uninstall Exchange first). Put the computer account into an OU that has no GPOs applied to it, none what so ever. Make sure the box does its thing with no errors and none of the GPO based stuff that happens on your other servers.

Then install Exchange 2007 and see where you are.

By all means come back here if and when the newly built box throws problems.

Dear Mark,

I have uninstalled Exchange from MS-02. (Would you advice rebuilding that server regardless whether I use it for exchange or not?)

Regarding MS-01 what would you suggest I do with that? Should I uninstall exchange from this server and rebuild it from scratch and then install exchange again into this domain? Would there be any problems doing this? As I'm not fussed about mailboxes at this stage as I only have one - however I'm trying to build a HA exchange enviornment and I only have about 4 -5 weeks to get this network built.

If I'm going to start again would you recommend that I use Server 2k3 r2 edition for my exchange servers rather than Server 2008? Would you also recommend that I rebuild the domain from scratch rather than trying to install exchange into the existing domain again?

What are your thoughts?

Regarding my only exchange server at present, the information store won't start, I have the other errors but here are the two errors I get when trying to start the information store service:-

Event 1121   MSExchangeIS

Error 0x96f connecting to the Microsoft Active Directory.

The link to MSHELP file from this event said amongst other things to run policytest.exe, I did and it failed

"C:\Users\iisnet>policytest.exe
This tool will check every domain controller in the lo
domain to see if the "Manage auditing and security log

group by DomainPrep has replicated to that DC.  If the
policy change has not yet replicated to all DCs, then
you should avoid making policy changes on any DC that
has not received those changes yet.

You must have Domain Admin rights to run this tool
successfully.  If you see an error that says:

then you don't have permission to open the LSA on the
given DC.

===============================================
Local domain is "ncw.local" (NCW)

and

Event 5000   MSExchangeIS

and

re: MS02. Yes, format the box and do like I say re the GPOs and such. Keep it as clean and generic as possible.

Re; MS01. Don't do anything yet. You've got major problems trying to get that box to AD. Get happy and fixed with 02 first.

Hi Mark

I just posted policytest results, if you check my last post you can see the results as I edited it.

Please make something clear to me, if I rebuild MS-02 and do a fresh install of exchange, I'm going to assume it will recognise that MS-01 has exchange installed and will get all the orginisation configuration from that, i,e. what users have mailboxes, what the email policy is, smarthost connectors etc

But as the Infostore on MS-01 wont start, won't I be in the same position as I am now where nothing works? I'm just trying to learn the product better that's all, I'm not trying to make out that you don't know what you're doing as I'm trying to learn from the experts :)

Just keen to learn, please let me know what you think on that

Cheers

You are going to install the HT, CAS and MB roles on 02. Then you're going to see if the server comes up. You're not even involved in looking at other servers yet. At the moment your environment is messed up, this is one way of determining if your AD is the real culprit or not. If you format and bring the new box on line, it joins the domain and continues to see the domain properly during multiple reboots you can install Exchange on it and see where it takes you.

Hi Mark,

Just to let you know, that I decided to run setup /preparedomain & setup /preparead & setup /prepareschema

and it has resolved all my problems, although before running this, I decided to uninstall the CAS role, Hub Transport role. I'm trying to currently uninstal the mailbox role but I can't due to the public folders containing data.

When I try to uninstall the public folder it says:-

Summary: 1 item(s). 0 succeeded, 1 failed.
Elapsed time: 00:00:15

Mailbox Role Prerequisites
Failed
Error:
Uninstall cannot continue. Database 'Public Folder Database': The public folder database "MS-01\Second Storage Group\Public Folder Database" contains folder replicas. Before deleting the public folder database, remove the folders or move the replicas to another public folder database. For detailed instructions about how to remove a public folder database, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=81409.
Recommended Action: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=30939&l=en&v=ExBPA.3&id=b6e3b32a-8848-46cb-9567-72288ac15f60
Elapsed Time: 00:00:15

When I try to follow the article, i.e. go to the toolbox, open the public folder mmc and then try removing the public folders (well the system public fodlers) I can't remove it, it sort os suggests that it could be due to permissions.

I'm logged on with the domain admin account which is also a member of the exhange orginization group so I should be able to shouldn't I?

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers
