I am in a position where I need to upgrade my Exchange quickly, but can't upgrade my SBS 2000 server.  A consultant I'm talking to tells me that we can install Exchange 2007 on my existing SBS 2000 domain and use it instead.  He says it will work as long as we add a DC to the domain that is running Server 2003 and is the Global Catalog server.  I know that you can add additional DC's to an SBS domain, but I always thought that the SBS box had to hold all the FSMO roles.  Is what he is saying true?

Thanks,
John

There's an article: http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Installing-Exchange-2007-Small-Business-Server-2003-domain-Part1.html and also a part 2 that talks about doing this in a 2003 SBS environment. I don't know if it's going to work for you in a 2000 environments.

I would ask you why you want to go with Exchange 2007 when your core infrastructure is only at SBS 2000? I would have thought you need to explain to management or whatever to bring everything up to date, not have a new Exchange version running in an environment that has no Microsoft support environment.

My accounting department is running an old version of Great Plains on the SBS 2000 server and the consultant they use for it said that it would be very expensive to migrate it because we would have to upgrade to a newer version and because we are so far befind in versions we would have to pay a steep penalty to Microsoft for support.  She said, however, that they offer amnesty periods from time to time, so we're waiting until one of those rolls around to move it.  If it wasn't for that, I'd get rid of the whole SBS install and have a standard domain with stand-alone servers for Exchange and SQL.
