I need to upgrade my exchange 5.5 std edition server (sp4) to the exchange enterprise version in order to limp along further until exchange 2000 can be implemented. I can't find any technets on the subject and don't know if it will be a quick upgrade of the bindaries or a full database upgrade. Anyone fancy giving me some pointers ?

One possible method to implement Exchange Server Enterprise edition to your scenarios is to implement another secondary exchange server with Enterprise edition installed on it & move your user mail boxes accross, also moving across any connectors & modify the MX records. This way you won't have a server offline for all your users (just the users being moved accross at the time & users will need tro be re-mapped). Once all mailboxes have been transfered across, settings &connectors verified you can decomission your existing Standard Edition Exchange Server. You will then have your Enterprise Exchnage Server in place. It is a big risk to try an in-place upgrade of a normal Exchange Server to Enterprise edition - not recommended for the faint hearted! See article Q170280. This is NOT a hard process. You can do it on the production server. I have done this my self. It is simple and easy. Even for the faint of heart. Watch Event Viewer app log on reboot to be sure IS is set to unlimited capacity.

To upgrade the Standard Edition of Microsoft Exchange Server to the Enterprise Edition of Microsoft Exchange Server, run the Setup program from the Exchange Server Enterprise Edition compact disc and click the Reinstall button. Make sure you re-install your Service Pack. This upgrade is a painless process; I have had to do this many times. The Speed of your server will depend on the time it takes to upgrade. As always successfully complete a full backup before you start the upgrade. I would recommend doing this on the weekend, put in some extra time, just to give yourself plenty of time in case something goes wrong. Remember even though this is Exchange; it is a Microsoft Product. -The Stu

The in place upgrade is the only option for us. We can take a ghost of the server before we try anything. How long does this take, ie does it just upgrade the software or does it have to upgrade the databases as well. This is a difference between 5 minutes and 10 hours.....

Do you have another box you could test this procedure on? You could probably even use a desktop class machine, install NT Svr, Exchange [different site, org...], etc. and configure it like your current Exchange box with a few test mailboxes. Then, try the upgrade and if it doesn't work, you haven't hosed a production machine.

Difference between Standard and Enterprise is Enterprise has x400 Connector and unlimited database space, no 16gb limit on Store. Make sure you have recent backup, do the upgrade during off hours, 10:00 pm or something. It shouldn't take that long.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone seems to answer most of my question indirectly but not the main part. ie. Does the upgrade process just update the exe's or does it update the process. The reason being if it does a full database upgrade i don't think i'll have enough disk space free to do it. Kinda important. I don't think that doing it on a test box will answer this question as it will happen behind the scenes. I suppose i could fill up the disk with rubbish so that there is very little space left but this could still be unconclusive. Any helpers?

It "updates" the databases. In certain situations there are ways to make a Standard version of Exchange, Enterprise. When you start Standard version, in App Log, you get 1016 or 1017 or 1216 or 1217, I forget which, which says this version of Exchange has "Limited" storage capacity. When you upgrade to Enterprise, you get event ..16,17,18, I forget which, which says you have "Unlimited" storage capacity. As far as my bad memory can remember, there is no way to get around this. It is not a heuristics value in Admin RAW that you can change. The upgrade to Enterprise doesn't do much to the databases, and it might not do anything to Priv and Pub, maybe only Dir.edb.

You can simply run the reinstall all from the Enterprise CD. It updates dir.edb file only and it does not require additional disk space. This is a safe procedure and it does not take long time. Just take times to re-install the files. Please reapply the Service pack. Please make sure to backup of exchange server prior to upgrade just in case. Please check the q240152. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q240152&id=240152&SD=MSKB Thanks.

Just to close this issue. Yeh its a doddle to do - it just seems like its a bigger issue than it actually is. Reinstall using srvmax.exe from the enterprise cd. Reinstall the service pack you previously had. Check for event 2117 on startup which states that the information store is unlimited. Its very quick also, upgrade took about 5mins for both the enterprise&reapply of sp4. The backup of the databases took 2 hours though! Thanks for all your help.
