Hello: I have a Exchange 5.5 server on a Win2K domain with AD that is missing the Global Catalog. I have built a new 2K3 domain and am migrating mail to a NEW Exchange 2K3 server. I have to move all the machines off the old domain as soon as possible but dont have Exch2k3 finalized yet. Doing a system back up is pretty much out of the question as that 5.5 server I would think is pretty fragile and it has hardware issues, raid that can not be anywhere near easily rebuilt. It would acutally be easier to export PST's and import again into Exch2k3. Our total priv and pub edb files are 2.0, and .5 gb respectively. Here are my questions: Can I move the Old 5.5/2k server to the new domain with out worrying about breaking Exch 5.5? Are there any tools I can use to help me do this? If not what is the best way to get onto the new domain and 2k3 box. I really dont want to have to worry about mail synchronization if I do the PST file method. And I fear with a corrupted Old Active Directory I wont be able to smoothly migrate from 5.5 to 2k3. I need the most failsafe method of migration as possible. Any and all help would be extremely appreciated.

The problem moved the Exchange 5.5 to the new domain is that it will break all the account permissions to mailboxes and to the Exchange administrators of Exchange (not easy to fix afterwards) unless the SIDs between the old and new domain accounts are the same.

Are there any tools to migrate with? Or am I best to just do a PST export/import?

You can use the Active Directory Connector (on the Exchange CD) to migrate accounts from 5.5 to 2000/3. Your new Exchange site must be still in Mixed mode for this to work.

AT this time I have a trust relationship. How do I check/upgrade/downgrade for Mixed mode?

Open Exchange System manager tool, open properties of the Organisation and it should say: Operation mode: Mixed Mode The alternative is Native Mode, but if its set to that you will not be able to use the ADC.

Thanks so far. I am in Mixed Mode, I installed both ADC tools Running the ADC I get to step 2 and it says I do not have permission to view Hidden objects in Exch 5.5. I remember that 5.5 administrator can only be viewed/modified completely with a special account which is the "exchadmin" Exchange Services account that I made for security reasons years ago. So the real question is how do i get the ADC to git into Exchange using this account so that the hidden objects in 5.5 can be seen or is this problem somewhere else?

When you configure the connectors you can specify which accounts to use to access the Exchange 5.5 server, in your case the 'exchadmin' a/c which will require rights at the Organisation and Site levels. You need to do this for configuration, user and public folder connectors.

Boy do I have a MESS now! I closed the ADC, tried to reopen it to see if I could get back into the config for the UN/PW/Domain stuff. Now I can not get into it and I can not get into Exhange at all... Any ideas? The bottom line.. How do I get in to reconfig the ADC UN/PW variables?

What rights does you Exchadmin have? You need a least Domain Admins and Exchange Full Administrator rights. Try using Administrator domain a/c if that fails.
