Weve been having a debate here about how to migrate from an Exchange 5.5 Server to an Exchange 2000 Server. I suggested that since Exchange 5.5 was not tied so tightly to Active Directory that they use EXMerg.exe to export the client data, then uninstall Exchange 5.5 and remove the Server from the Domain (Active Directory is running in mixed mode). Then install a new 2000 Server with the same name as the NT Server, get it setup with AD and use the DCPromoà Then install Exchange 2000, then import client data into the new Exchange Server and be doneà Is this not a good method..? (I may have left a few obvious tweaks out)

06scooter60 ,
?'s
Is the exchange 5.5 server a PDC or BDC in the domain? How many users are on this exchange 5.5 server?
Reason I ask is that I have a process that I have used multiple times to migrate from exchange 5.5 to exchange 2000 that avoides the touching of the client that Exmerge introduces and allows you to keep the same name on the Exchange 2000 server.

The 5.5 Server is a BDC... And there are 65 accounts... The Network already has 3 W2K servers, one has Active Directory installed, the others are just domain members for now... at some point, we're going to upgrade at least 1 more to an AD Server. The only NT4 Server left is the Exchange. My tech and I are argueing about either installing exchange 2000 on an existing w2k server or removing the NT4 and replacing with w2k server so that we can keep the same name... can't decide which way is the best way...
