Can anyone tell me what changes I need to make to exchange to use my ADSL connection to pick up mail rather than a dial up connection via my old modem.

At present I use the 'finger' command to de-queue mail from my ISP. But with a permanaent connection how do I automate this routine

Just talk to your ISP and have them send the mail directly to you using SMTP. You don't need to dequeue it if your connection is nailed up. They can just push messages to you when mail comes in.
