We're going to be undertaking an Exchange upgrade over the next few weeks from Exchange 2010.
Our current Exchange 2010 implementation consists of Exchange on our Forest Room Domain, where our users are.
We were acquired a few years ago after the initial Exchange installation was completed and we have subsequently brought up a resource domain in the same forest that we may/may not migrate our users to sometime in the future.
All new servers that we bring up are to be installed into this secondary resource domain, and that includes the new Exchange upgrade.
I'm resisting this change, as an in-place installation Of Exchange 201X into the same root domain as the existing Exchange would be much simpler and the migration path would be much easier. I have a feeling I would have to create a user account for each mailbox user in the resource domain and then give their main user account access to this mailbox and then do a PST import, but there may be an easier way that I am not seeing.
Is it even possible to install Exchange 201X in the resource domain and have the users remain in the parent root domain?

Any guidance would be helpful.
