Hi,
I have an issue with our exchange. It seems that today is the second time this has happened.

Everyone in the company cannot access their emails (both exchange and POP3) in the morning when I come into the office. I reboot the server and it is fine, although when i get to the logon screen it displays a message about something failing and not being able to start. I dont think this has anything to do with it as the emails work fine after.

I know this sounds very vague but I have got no idea whats going on. Im new to using exchange as I havent been working in IT very long, and my boss manages the system... But he is away for 3 weeks.

I have been setting up new emails lately for new users. Could this be affecting the system? Maybe I havent been setting them up properly, although I cant see how I wouldnt be.

Thanks alot in advance

Well look in the event log.  Look in both the application and system logs.  It was working before you left and not when you arrived.  What is happening in between?  Any errors?  Backups?  Do backups run at night?  Are the backups complaining?  Are they working?

How crucial is mail to your company?  If it's anything like mine....then you need to start dialing your bosses cell number.  You can't get him....get out your credit card and call MS Support for your Exchange product

Without further info and the fact that you don't seem very knowledgeable about the product, then we are not going to be able to really help you here and if your boss is unavailable you should call MS support before something happens to the store. You may be able to reboot and get it back up now, but if this leads to a morning when you reboot and it still doesn't come up then your really not going to have a good day.

I know what the problem is now, the server is getting clogged up with people's emails. It has reached its limit and I need to get people to archive their mail to free up some space.

You are hitting the 5am check. Exchange checks the size of the database at 5am each day and if you have gone over the limit it will shutdown the store. When you restart the server the store is allowed to start again until the next morning.

You haven't said how large the store is, but the limit with Exchange 2003 SP2 is 75gb. If you haven't got that large then you can increase it with a registry change.

Yeah our limit is 75Gb. Thanks for the reply, I was curious as to when it actually checked its limit. It hasnt locked up for the past 4 days though, and nobody has been clearing their mail. Is there a way of turning off this 5am check? Because I think my boss has done this remotely once I told him what was going on.

Thanks

Technically you can by creating a custom maintenance schedule with no checks, but that isn't really a good idea.  Your boss may have also cleared out space.  Look in your Application Log to see if it is still generating 1221 Events (normally one per day).  If it isn't, he has stopped the maintenance routine.  If it is, he may have cleared space by purging deleted items or deleted mailboxes.  The body of the 1221 Event will indicate how much whitespace is now available.

Yeah, thats what he did. Was also trying to work out why some new users I created were not appearing in the GAL. Apparently, they can take a while to appear on the list in people's Outlook.

That is normal.
Outlook 2003 and higher uses cached mode by default. Cached mode uses the Offline Address Book which is only generated once a day by default. Therefore it can take almost 48 hours before changes are seen by the clients.
