We have three exchange 5.5 servers in three different offices connected via routers (TCP/IP). The exchange servers are in one organisation in diffent sites and are connected with site connectors and directory replication. Some mail and directory replication passes through the MTA without any problems until a message gets stuck. The following events are recorded in NT event log : 9318, 2037, 1294 & 289. These errors indicate that an RPC error and MTA errors have occurred, it then attempts to send the message again after 10 minutes, which normally fails also. If I manually force a directory replication the MTA queue empties sucessfully. This occurs with both of the connected sites and in both directions. I do not believe that it is a bandwidth problem, I have monitored the router throughput at the time that a transmission has failed and it only reached a maximum of 9%. I have adjusted the RTS (Reliable Transfer Service) values within the MTA but this has had no effect. If anyone has a solution to this problem (or just any ideas to try) I thank you in advance.

As per a MS support article: 1. Try to ping the other server by both IP address & server name.2. Try to do a net view \\servername to verify NetBios name resolution. 3. Try to do a net use \\servername\ipc$ to verify rights issues. If steps 1 and 2 fail, the problem is one of basic network connectivity. check the ip address and the WINS/DNS/HOSTS files. If step 3 fails, check the Windows access rights for the Exchange server account being used. Note a 9318 RPC error message with a 1722 error code indicates the RPC server is unavailable. Hope this helps. Jim
