Hi

I tried this question in the Exchange SBS2003 forum but didn't get a reply so I'm trying it here as well.

I need to use an external SMTP client (that is, one not on the local network) to send emails through Exchange Server 2003 on SBS.  The network connects to the Internet via an ADSL router and all outgoing emails from Exchange are sent via a SmartHost.

The client works properly when email is sent from it to an external email address and the email is delivered.  However when email is sent to a local recipient (someone on the same domain) it never arrives.

The client authenticates properly with a valid username and password.  Exchange is not set up as an open relay.

There aren't any error messages at the client and the email gives every sign of being sent correctly but then it never arrives.  I've added an MX record for the local domain to the internal DNS but this hasn't made any difference (probably because of the SmartHost routing).

My guess is that all SMTP-derived outgoing email is sent directly to the SmartHost without Exchange checking the recipient's domain (but I could be wrong about this).

I don't want to change the type of remote client, nor do I want to change SmartHost into sending using DNS if at all possible.

Any ideas on what I might have to do to get Exchange to deliver the mail for local recipients instead of losing it?

Thanks for your help.

Richard.

Hi,

Normally Exchange knows what's internal and external.  Try to enable message tracking to see where Exchange delivers the mail ?

Where is the smart host set? On an SMTP Connector or on the SMTP virtual server? Even so, if the email was being sent out to the smart host, it should come back in again.

Simon.

sorry to have wasted everyone's time - the error was in the SMTP client all the time, not in Exchange.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

Richard.
