Hi, We are preparing the 1st DC with schema master role for exchange 2003. I ran forestprep without error, yet no new tabs at user properties are created and when I ran Adsiedit.msc -> CN=configuration-CN=services,CN=MsExchange, properties-objectversion <not set> is displayed indicating forestprep did not work. Domainprep installs ok. The account I am using is a member of Enterprise and Schema admins. Initially, we had installed SP1 on the 2003 server which I later removed yet I am still unable to install forestprep. Is there anything I may have left out? Any suggestions are very much welcome.

Hi,
You won't be able to see the exchange tabs till the exchange system manager has been installed.
Did you see any events 1575 recorded in the Directory Service event log on the domain controller where you ran /forestprep? http://support.microsoft.com/?id=274737

Thanks for reply. My Exdeploy log looks like this;
#*** Exdeploy began: 08/01/2005 08:41:30 ***# + Exchange 5.5 Server: treefrog + Global Catalog Server: treefrog + Tools run: OrgPrepCheck.
- Error: Could not connect to the Exchange 5.5 server 'treefrog'. Tools that require an Exchange 5.5 server will not run.
+ Preparing Active Directory for Exchange Server 2003 (OrgPrepCheck)
- Organization Readiness Check (OrgCheck) OrgCheck verifies the Exchange extensions to the Active Directory schema, checks the existence and membership of the Exchange Domain Servers group and Exchange Enterprise servers group, and checks that a global catalog server is available in a domain in which DomainPrep has been run.
Warning: The Exchange Domain Servers group 'cn=Exchange Domain Servers,cn=Users,DC=lizard,DC=kingsdown,DC=swindon,DC=sch,DC=uk' does not contain the local computer 'CN=TREEFROG,OU=Domain Controllers,DC=lizard,DC=kingsdown,DC=swindon,DC=sch,DC=uk'. If the local computer is not running Exchange Server 2003, this is not a problem. OrgCheck completed successfully.
- Policy Check (PolCheck) PolCheck verifies that the necessary permissions are configured correctly on domain controllers. Details are logged to exdeploy-polcheck.log.
Warning: Possible error string '! Right NOT found !' detected in policytest output. Error: PolCheck found a problem with permissions given to Exchange Server 2003 computers in your Active Directory.
#*** Exdeploy finished: 08/01/2005 08:41:32 ***#
The GC server will not host exchange. 1)Does this mean than forestprep ran ok? 2) How do I fix the polcheck error?
Thanks Paul

Hi, This is an update. My log file has cleared of previous polcheck errors and now looks like the following;
#*** Exdeploy began: 08/01/2005 11:37:51 ***# + Exchange 5.5 Server: treefrog + Global Catalog Server: treefrog + Tools run: OrgPrepCheck.
PolCheck completed successfully.
#*** Exdeploy finished: 08/01/2005 11:37:51 ***#
My worry is that when I ran ADSI snapin I get objectversion 6936 for domainprep but <value not set> for forestprep check.
Does this mean that domainprep has been installed successfully and not forestprep?
Regards Paul

Hi Paul,
Your Exdeploy log looks worrying, have you chked ur connectivity from the 2k3 server to the 5.5 server?
The fact that Exdepoly cant contact the 5.5 server is the 1st thing you should fix. Once that is sorted u should have no probs.
Oh by the way if Forestprep fails it will display an error and will not complete...

Hi, I was first running forest/domain prep on DC with GC before installing exchange 2003 on a different server. So at this time there is no server with exchange installed. Should it be ok now to install exchange on the other server? Regards Paul

I'm having a similar problem to yours. Both my OrgCheck and PolCheck processed complete successfully, but I'm getting the same:
- Error: Could not connect to the Exchange 5.5 server 'xxxxxx'. Tools that require an Exchange 5.5 server will not run.
Yet I can ping the server by name and by ip address and I double checked to make sure the default LDAP port is set to 389.
Any ideas?
TIA

I had the same problem. I had my NT domain containing Exchange 5.5 trust the AD domain. This removed the error.

Has anyone found any solutions to this problem? We *do* have the NT 4 domain with Exch 5.5 trusting the new 2003 domain, but we are still getting the "could not connect to the Exchange 5.5 server" error. We have set up the trust at both ends, we can ping back and forth, we can browse back and forth, but when trying to use the exchange deployment tools we get that error. Any ideas, suggestions? Thanks so much! Jon

Can you please try this? Install the Exchange 5.5 admin program on your future Exchange 2003 server. You can select the Exchange 5.5 admin program as part of the Exchange 2003 installation. When this is installed on your Exchange 2003 server try to connect to your Exchange 5.5 server using this tool. If you get errors here it could be either. Permission, Mismatched security DLL files on your Exchange 5.5 server if its running Windows NT4. Could be DNS related, Give it a try and tell me if you get any connection issues.

I found that I needed to give the Administrator in the AD domain permission to the Site, Organization and Configuration objects in the Exchange 5.5 Management Tool . See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/150880
