Ok, I've got a fun one here for any serious exchange 2000 buffs. I'm running exchange 2000 on windows 2000 advanced server. I'm accepting inbound mail for about 10 domains. One of those domains is a special case and I wanted all email sent to that domain to go to an SQL table. So, I created my own custom SMTP server on port 26 that accepts all email and inserts it into the SQL table.
The Problem: Getting exchange to accept mail for that domain and forward it on to my custom SMTP server sitting on port 26 on the same machine.
I've read: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q260973
and I've configured things and tweaked things. It seems that exchange is built to forward unresolved recipients on to other hosts, but the problem is getting exchange server to 1) send to an alternate port (not standard port 25) and 2) getting it to do this to it's own IP address.
What I've done so far: I've setup a recipeint policy for the domain, leaving the "This exchange org is responsible for all mail delivery to this address" unchecked. I've setup a virtual SMTP server setup so outbound connections go to port 26 and all mail delivered through it goes to localhost [127.0.0.1]. I've setup an SMTP connector with address space of SMTP "domain.com", "Allow messages to be relayed to these domains" checkbox checked, local bridgehead server is pointed to the SMTP virtual server I created for this purpose.
Error I get: A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients. Contact your administrator.
It seems as if Exchange is not checking to see if the delivery is really to it's own SMTP server (on port 25) and just assumes that, because the IP address is the same that it must be sending to itself and bounces the message before attempting to deliver it. OR, exchange could actually be delivering it to itself (not to port 26) and I just don't know what I'm doing. My only question is about the local bridgehead server setting on the SMTP connector... is that used to specify what SMTP virtual server to use to SEND mail or to RECEIVE mail that flows through the connector?
Thanks in advance for any help.
