Hello everybody,

Before reinstalling Server 2008 R2 and Exchange 2010 I copied the existing database files to a backup folder.

After the installation with same domain name etc I would like to re-use this old database again. Is there a procedure how to accomplish this?

Anybody?

Hi Herman,

I think you want to reinstall your exchange server but like to use the existing DB.

In that case, you need to the follow the procedures for Exchange Disaster Recovery.

Hope your DC is still exist. Incase if your DC also reinstalled then its not possible to reuse your existing Exchange DB.

Procedure for performing Exchnage Disaster Recovery:
1. Note down the current configurations of your Existing Exchange Server( Server configuraion, Drive and all other configurations)
2. Take the backup of your Exchang DB and Log files and keep it in safe place.
3. Remove the Server name object from the Active Directory.
4. Reinstall the Server with the same name and Same OS as it was previously and configure the same Drive settings and create same DB path as it was previously.
5. Join the server to the Domain.
6. And copy your Exchange DB and log files from the backup to the DB path as it was earlier.
7. Copy the Exchnage 2010 Setup files locally.
8. From the command prompt run the Exchnage setup with the following switch:
   Setup.exe /m:Recoverserver
   This will reinstall your exchange 2010 server with the same settings as it was configured previously.

9. After the exchange installation try to mount the Exchange DB.
   In your Backup DB is in cleant shutdown state it will mount. Otherwise you need to perform SoftRepair/Hard Repair to bring the DB to clean shutdown state.

Hope this informations will help you.

Hi Rajeswaran,

First of all thank you for this great explination!

For my understanding. I can reinstall the whole server (DC) as long it is given the the same local domain name? My Exchange 2010 is installed on this DC.

Does this procedure also work when I have the database located on a different location? My database is located on the D partition for example.

HermanF72,

Do you have any other domain controllers for this domain available online or was the DC running Exchange the only DC?? What happened to the server that requires it to be reinstalled?

If it was your only domain controller and it crashed, then you basically have to completely reinstall your active directory, recreate all your users and rejoin all your computers to the domain. I recommend to install at least 2 DCs and do NOT use the name of the previous DC on any of them.

Once done, configure a new member server with the same name as the crashed exchange server. It really is not recommended to have Exchange running on a domain controller! Reconfigure the server with the same hard drive configuration and make it identical to how it was before (that is, if you had 2 drives named C: and E:, make sure you set up the new server the same way!). You then have to recreate the Exchange organization using the same name as it was before, reconfigure the entire organization and setup the exchange mailbox database with the same name as you had it before. Once the server is up and running, you can dismount the database, copy the backup into the database location and try to mount it. If it was in a clean shutdown when the server crashed, it should mount up fine.
