Scenario:

We are migrating a large number of users from groupwise to Exchange. The Exchange account is formatted as first.last@new.company.com. The GW account is formatted as flast@old.company.com. While each user is in transition, we set a forwarding rule on their groupwise mailbox (flast) to forward all incoming email to their exchange mailbox (first.last). I configured their old email addresses as aliases on the Exchange mailboxes so that they can continue using their old addresses without asking everyone in the world to update their address books. Once the user is fully migrated, we delete the groupwise mailbox and configure an external address on the GW server to pass incoming emails on to their Exchange address.

The problem:

The forwarding rule in the GW mailbox works 95% of the time, but for a small percentage of users, it forwards to the wrong address. A new email comes in to flast@old.company.com, which attempts to forward it to first.last@new.company.com. Somewhere between the forwarding rule and the Exchange server, it's losing the ".last" from the address. The logs on the Exchange server show failed delivery attempts to first@new.company.com. Exchange sends "undeliverable" messages to flast@old.company.com, but since I've added flast@old.company.com as aliases on the first.last@new.company.com mailboxes, the Exchange server drops the "undeliverable" messages into the local mailboxes instead of sending them out to the Internet.

The Groupwise administrator says that his server shows the outgoing messages going to first.last@new.company.com.

I've double-checked the forwarding rules on the GW clients to make sure they were created correctly.

Where are these first@new.company.com email addresses coming from?
