For my customers, I want to start purchasing HW that will run E12 in the future, being 64Bit machines.

Since I can't install E2k3 on a 64 Bit OS (according to what I have read) that means I have to lay down WIN2K3 x32 on the hardware.  Fine.

I can't see how, without the use of a swing server and a couple of rebuilds to upgrade to E12 on that same peice of hardware.  It's a pain, but we charge by the hour, so...

My question is, can run E2K3 on Virtual Server 2005R2 on top of a Windows 2003 x64.  The layers:

Exchange 2003 SP2
Windows 2003 R2 - Standard 32 Bit on a 32 Bit VM
--------------------------------------
Virtual Server 2003 R2 - 64Bit
---------------------------------------
Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise - 64Bit and E12

I guess my questions are:

1) Will the above work, or will there still be a exchange storage driver issue?
2) If this does work, then can this be the path to a migration in the future by moving / exporting the E2K3 databases down to E12 running in the 64 bit Environment?

Or am I on drugs?

Hi Darryl,

Even though you prepare the hardware in your Exchange 2003 org by using 64-bit hardware already now, you still nedd to re-install when Exchange 12 RTMs. Exchange 12 doesn't support in-place upgrades either from Exchange 2000 or 2003.

With that said then yes you should be able to run E2K3 in a VM on a 64-bit server running W2K3 64-bit version, then move mailboxes between the E2K3 and E12 servers (because of the changes made in the E12 store you can't move the databases directly to the E12 servers).

I tried to move Exchange mailboxes between E2K3-E12 and E12-E12.. but the CTP build does not allow this yet.. (as far as I;ve seen).. it comes up with one message.. MAPI error..
