I installed Exchange, and some of my Mac users are not happy with the web client. They all insist on using Gmail as a client. How can I support them without losing the ability to fetch their incoming and outgoing mail?

If they want to use gmail let them. Just don't give them access to corporate resources. What do you want to do with their incoming mail? How is it going to get to gmail and what's the point getting mail to you and forwarded to gmail if they are going to send via gmail and bypass your domain name on the way out.

I might be missing something but I don't get the point.

Sorry I need to be more clear, when I say Gmail, I am talking about Gmail for domains. We were all on gmail for domains before the switch to exchange. So some people want to retain their gmail for domains account and get corporate email. I looked into using the SMTP function within gmail for domains, which it lets you specify an outside SMTP server. Then I would using advanced journaling to capture that outgoing email on the exchange server and have it synchronized that way. I would use pop importing to capture incoming on gmail for domains. Let me know if I am on the right path, or is there a much easier way.

No, that's just awful. It would kill you in adminstration time alone. Where was management when they approved the implementation of Exchange but didn't mandate that everyone move to it?

If your domain is no longer 'at' Google then they won't accept mail to it. So, the only way for your users to keep using gmail is for you to create an AD contact of their name and gmail.com address and then forward the domain mail to it. Either that or don't have a mailbox and use a mail enabled account (pointing to gmail) rather than a mailbox enabled account that you forward.

Seriously dumb idea that you need to take to management for them to tell the people to STFU and move to Exchange.

There is nothing that you can't do in Exchange that you can in gmail.

Will this method also capture outbound email that is generated with gmail for domains?
If not, any cure for that?

These are high powered execs that will not budge from gmail for domains, this is why I am forced to find a workaround. They like all the other services that are part of the gmail (IE: IM, Video Conferencing, Google Docs, etc)

There is no synching between the two so if someone sits on gmail and generates a page it isn't going to get into Exchange.

My question to you is why you bothered with Exchange in the first place? Given the power and authority these people have why did Exchange get approved?

Don't tell me, competing execs?

Hi,

I agree with Mark on the question of why Exchange was purchased and installed.

I am sure you could easily make a case for WHY everyone should be on Exchange verse the Mac guys using GMAIL. Have you looked at Entourage for the Mac clients with Exchange? I thought there was a new client for Macs that is Exchange aware.

Rule number one on project management you must have an executive champion that will get full management buy in prior to even buying the first software or hardware.

Sorry, but it sounds like you are in the middle of a pissing matching with management.

Yes, there is a pissing match going on, but I am right in the middle of it all.

So using gmail for domains / Outside SMTP and using Exchange Server Journaling is not going work?

It's going to suck resources and bleed you dry.

If you use Exchange 2007 and journal an Exchange user mailbox to his gmail.com address (his actual gmail address, not the domain.com address) then that's a way to get mail to the users gmail account. There is a limit on the number of messages you can send per day so it will fail sometime during day one.

If you reconfigure the client PC to send email through your Exchange server (i.e. collect from their gmail accounts but send through you) then that will work for outbound messages.

If you use gmail web interface entirely you're SOL.

It is never, ever going to work well and your replacement will use three, and only three letters when he takes over: W T F.

I don't like this anymore than you do, trust me.

"If you reconfigure the client PC to send email through your Exchange server (i.e. collect from their gmail accounts but send through you) then that will work for outbound messages."

So I could setup a remote server that has outlook running. Please tell me more detail how to configure the outlook client to where it collects gmail outbound messages, and then send them to the exchange server.

You know what. No. Just tell management no.
Outlook doesn't have a server product. If you use a POP/IMAP client it will have SMTP settings. Change those. If you don't know how, refer to the help for that product. I can't help you with your products.

Really though, tell them no.
