I know, I know.. people still use Exchange 2000? <sigh>
9.2gig .edb and 4.2 .stm. Actual mailboxes are at around 1 gig total. 8.0 gig in deleted files. (ESM - deleted items(kb))
Deleted file retention set to first 0 then I changed it to one day. These messages have been deleted for about a week. Online defrag showed 1mb free whitespace. Offline defragged Friday and then changed deleted file retention to 1 day. Yesterday after online defrag ran, I now have 1.5g in free space. But I still have a kagillion (yes, 8gig is a kagillion to me) deleted files in there. I am not seeing any errors. I DON'T have the checkbox selected to require a good backup before deleted files are really really deleted. I am so lost! Is there anything anyone can thing of for me to check? If you help me solve this and you are in the Cleveland area, lunch is on me! LOL Thanks for checking this out.. :) ~Michelle

Just for curiosity how many mailboxes do you have?
If I am not mistaken, the deleted items column considers single instance storage but I may be wrong about that but either way I don't think that will count for 8gb.
Check at the user level in ADUC to be sure they are using dbase defaults and not a manually set higher time of deleted item retention.
Create a new storage group and a new mailbox store. Migrate the users to the new mailbox store. That's better than an offline defrag and you have the space to do it.
If I remember correctly, deleted items do not move with a mailbox migrations (prior to Exchange 2010).

Ok - I didn't make a new store. I checked in my local Outlook settings under Tools - Recover Deleted Items. Turns out I have 1.2 gig in there! Two other people had over 3 gig in theirs. Now, how in the heck that happened is beyond me. The users in the ADUC are set to use the default settings on Exchange. I don't have a weird group policy in place. Once I deleted the items, I ran an offline defrag and now I'm at 4.5g compared to 13g! I'm not sure what happened and I have no clue where to check now but I'm going to run some tests over the next couple of days. Thanks again for your help!
