Hmm....well if you have other data stored on the drive with your databases...such as: transaction logs: perform a backup to "trucate/remove logs" (probably already doing this) other data: try and remove/move this to other locations. Don't: compress the databases (Sorry, just wanted to say that :) Don't: manually delete any of the transaction logs (that could/would be bad) The only way to shrink information stores is to do the offline defrag. It's very invasive to the business I know, but it's something you can "schedule" and better than having your disk fill up sometime around 1am and you learning about it first thing in the morning :) Also, there are some basic time estimates of running a defrag out on the internet. I believe 8Gb per hour is a very general estimate..but with fast drives/CPU etc. your defrag can go much faster. Be sure to backup your database prior to and after your defrag. Good luck.

A-ha. These files get removed after a succesful backup. Do not manually delete them. Perform a backup and your transaction logs will go from 1000 to ~6 log files. If you don't have a 3rd party backup solution, you can use the Native Windows 2003 Backup to do an "Exchange" backup. You just need space to perform the backup to.....gulp.

A quick way to free up disk space w/out having to shutdown Exchange services is to move all users off of the mailbox store, to another mailbox store, then delete the old database, mount a blank database, then move the users back. This is assuming that you have the free space available.

I would not endorse that solution. Here's why: 1) Quick in this case is relative based on the number of users and size of the mailboxes. 2) Your transaction logs will grow as you move users off of the mailbox store. So, yes your DB will shrink, but your logs will grow substantially due to the double mailbox moves. Cheers.

Hello: I am having similar issue: I am running out of space on both 1. Database store 2. Transaction log share I tried to do a full backup using Legato Networker 7.2 and i did not see any changes in the transaction log share. I read in forums, that after doing a FULL backup of the exchange server, the transaction logs would reduce significantly. Please somebody explain if is there anything i am missing. Here. Thanks

Hello, This was being considered for our move to Exchange 2003. Is there any other reasons besides the ones listed that this would be a bad idea? Our DB is 40GB, we are currently using Ex2000 Enterprise and we would be moving to EX2003. We have a little over 100 mailboxes. Thanks!
