Hello All,

I need HELP! I am in the process of migrating from 2003 to 2007. I've been following the instructions in a very good Exchange 2007 book, thought I had my ducks in a row, but now I'm confused and worried.

I followed all of the prep instructions (checking DNS, AD, and running the prep programs for 2007. I have a brand new server to replace the old one, which I set up following a recommended configuration; OS on a mirror, logs and temps on a separate drive, and exchange on a Raid 5 array.

So today I installed 2007. It installed with no surprises EXCEPT it appears to have taken control of the old 2003 server. I expected it to extend the schema and I see it within Exchange Manager. I see the 2003 mailboxes as legacy (ok). I migrated my mailbox and now I cannot receive mail. I can send it, but not receive it. Am I missing a connector of some sort or is the install blown, or am I not far enough into the install? The 2003 users seem to be OK, it's 10:30pm and I've received no calls about Email being down.

Can someone PLEASE explain where I'm at and what to do next? I was under the impression that both servers could coexist and I could migrate groups or departments to the new server one at a time. I don't want to sound overly dramatic, but I'm very worried about what I've done.

2 questions: where you are not able to receiv mails, 2003? or 2007?
Where the mails are coming from within Exchange org(i,e co-existing users) or from internet?

If in 2007, check the default Receive connector, the "Anonymous" is not enabled in "Permission groups" by default, which is required for accepting mails from Internet.

If not able to receive from 2003 to 2007, check the 2003 server's smarthost settings.

in the 2003 exchange server ensure that you have routing group connectors between e2k3 and e2k7.  also do you have a smarthost on the exchange 2003?

It appears I cannot receive mail from either internal or external sources.

Yes in the 2003 server there is a connector that shows an icon connecting the two servers together. I cannot access it from the 2003 server

I see where the smart host is configured in 2003, but nothing is defined there. Should the 2007 server be added there?

I tried adding the 2007's IP in the smart host field and it stopped outbound Email.

A smart host is used by an exchange server as a forwarder for emails so that messages are relayed to the internet using the smart host. Do not use the E2K7 server was the smart host.

In order to receive emails on a new install of E2K7, you need to make sure you select anonymous permission under the permissions group of the Default Receive Connector (as mentioned by ravisha_22)

How many exchange 2007 servers do you have deployed? Can you confirm that you have installed the hub transport role??

Well here's what happened since my last post. I enabled the smart host on both the E2K3 and the E2K7. My Email started working, but everyone on the 2003 server could not send out.

We're a small company, so we only have one Email server. I made sure the permissions were set as stated above. I came across a blurb in this Exchange manual I have stating that 2003's that are bridgehead servers should be replaced first as the 2007 server can fully access the 2000/2003 servers. So it sounds like my problem is a fight for control of routing between the 03 and 07 boxes.

OK I'm ready to smash something. I don't understand what is going on. I understood 2003 but 2007 has me totally confused.

Here where I am. I have a EXC 2003. I installed EXC 2007 on a new box. I installed it with the intentions of them coexisting and slowly migrating the 2003 users over to the 2007. I have a pile of TechNet papers and a giant 2007 manual here. Everything I check looks correct, yet there seems to be no communication between the two. If there is, it kills something on the 2003 side. I'm going to do a brain dump and hopefullly someone can sort this out. Here it comes.

First - There are three roles installed on the 2007 box: Client Access, Hub Transport and Mailbox. In the Hub Transport section I have two receive connectors Client and Default. They are configured exactly the same except the depault is pointed at port 25 and the Client is at port 587. Why two?

Second - On the 2003 there are the correct connectors in place between the two servers, with the 2003 as the bridgehead. There is also an additional SMTP connector on the 2003 box with a little world Icon in it. I guess this is where the mail traffic is routed to and from the 2003 box.

Third - No smart host settings are in place on either server. If it is needed, which server does it go on and does it point to the opposit server? I tried setting the 2007 server  in the 2003's smart host settings and it stopped outbound email from the 2003 box.

What am I missing??????

Does your mail get filtered for SPAM by a thrid party?  If so, your smart host would be their IP.  Or if you're filtering your own mail on one of your systems it would be that system's IP.  What is the smart host pointing to on your 2003 exch server?  Whatever that was before you started migration; that's what it should be on the 2007 box.  Also is everything right in DNS?

There never was an entry in the Smart Host field that I could remember. Only the Domain Name field above it was filled in. What should be in the smart host field? DNS is correct as I see it. No 3rd party SPAM filtering either.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I ended up taking this to Microsoft where I spent 3 hours with a "Connector Specialist" untangling a mess. It seems the last Admin who manged the 2003 box had some mis-configs that only showed up when the 2007 box was brought in. Also configs were changed on the 2007 server. We went in and out of so many registry hacks and command line programs I could not even begin to explain what was wrong.

But it's all good now. I have another question, but I'll start another thread on that.
