I don't know if the problem is with DNS (Windows server) or Exchange (version 6.5, fully patched), to be honest. Here's what I'm trying to do: I want users to be able to receive email sent to username@subdomain.domain.com (Users are already successfully receiving email sent to username@domain.com). Here's what I've done: In the DNS zone for domain.com, I've set up a sub-domain (subdomain.domain.com), and added an MX record that points to "exchange.domain.com", which is a valid "A" record that points to the Exchange server's IP address. On the Exchange server, I edited the default recipient policy by adding in "@subdomain.domain.com", and checked the checkbox for it (I didn't set it as the default SMTP address, since I want the "username@domain.com" to be the default). If I send an email directly from the Exchange server (using OWA), the new email addresses work - I can successfully send email to "username@subdomain.domain.com", in other words. However, if I send the same email to the same address from an external sourse (gmail, for example), the mail does not arrive - I eventually get a notice that the email could not be delivered but will be attempted again. So what am I missing? This is kicking my butt!

Go to the Recipient Policy where you defined username@subdomain.domain.com, highlight it and click Edit. Did you check the box, "This Exchange is responsible for all mail delivery to this address" ?

That was checked, but thanks for the suggestion. I have discovered some additional information that partially contradicts my first post, however... Inbound email for "domain.com" actually goes to a different (non-Exchange) mail server that's on the same subnet as the Exchange server. There is a mailbox on that other mail server that corresponds to each mailbox on the Exchange server. Each of those mailboxes on the other mail server is configured to forward all incoming email to "username@domain.local". I can successfully configure the other mail server to forward email to "username@subdomain.domain.com" - works great to the Exchange server. I just want this to occur without the need to use another mail server. So the Exchange server is NOT actually receiving "username@domain.com" email at all like I thought it was. Not sure if this is relevant. I do want the Exchange server to be able to directly receive "username@subdomain.domain.com" email, however. I suspected a firewall issue, but I just checked and TCP port 25 seems to be open. Any other ports needed?

ALL FIXED!!! It was the firewall after all! I thought I tested port 25 but I must have done the test wrong, because after double-checking it, port 25 traffic could NOT access the Exchange server from outside our network. Once I had a rule added to allow port 25 traffic through, inbound emails to username@subdomain.domain.com started arriving! Thanks for the assistance, uemurad!
