I have been testing Managed Folder Mailbox policies for a few days now, and although I've had some success, nothing has worked consistently. I am new at this (Exhange 2007 is the first Exchange server we've ever deployed) so I am just trying to figure out how this all works. I have set a schedule for the Managed Folder Assistant. My question has two parts: - If the Managed Folder Mailbox Policy applies to more than one folder, in what order does the Managed Folder Assistant apply the different policies to the different folders? For example, I have two Test policies: the first is set to move messages to the Deleted Items folder when they're 2 days old; the second is set to move messages to the dumpster when they're 1 day old. For both policies, retention begins when the message is delivered. If I manually run the Start-ManagedFolderAssistant command twice, the item will go to the Deleted Items folder on the first run, and go to the dumpster on the second run. However, when I allow the Managed Folder Assistant to run at it's scheduled time, the message only gets moved to the Deleted Items folder, not the dumpster.
- I also have recovered an item from the dumpster and moved it back to my Inbox. It is 27 days old, so when the Managed Folder Assistant runs, it should be moved to the Deleted Items folder--but it's not getting moved there. If an item has been recovered from the dumpster, is it then exempt from the Managed Folder policies?
Thank you so much for any help.

Both your questions are answered by the same fact. Retention does not start when the item was delivered. It starts when the item was last modified. Therefore the move of the item to Deleted Items is a change to the item. The recovery of the item from the Dumpster is a change to the item. Simon.

I think I am wrong actually - or at least partially. I have had my head in Exchange 2003 systems all day, so may well be thinking of it from that. Catches me out some times as I have five versions of Exchange in my head, all with different quirks. In the Default Managed Folder policy you can choose when the retention period starts. There is a setting for when delivered and for when the item was moved to the folder. Check your policy settings carefully. Simon.

Hey Simon, Unfortunately it appears that you were incorrect--can't blame you when you've got 5 versions of Exchange on the brain! The email that I recovered from the dumpster is still in my Inbox, even though it should have been long gone. I know the policies are working because they're affecting all of my other messages. It appears that items that have been recoverd from the dumpster are no longer affected by mailbox policies. Has anyone heard of this? I've been resesarching the heck out of it and have turned up nothing. Thanks a million. Jess
