I have inherited a debacle.
The old IT guy was really shady and provided no as-built documentation. - or passwords.

The existing Exchange 5.5 server - installed on a win2k BDC is not working. It looks like he maybe did a failed restore. None of the Services will run.

I did an offline backup.
I want to do a restore on a fresh server.

I do NOT have any of the configuration information for this server. Not the account, the site name, nor the organization name. I can't really guess because this server serves multiple domains with aliasing, so I don't know what is the 'original' install organization.

How can I discover this information?
Site name
Organization name
I have discovered (I think) the service account

any help?

There are 2 places to look:
a) Registry esp. HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services and look at Parameters for the Exchanges services. I think you can get the Organisation + Site name here
e.g.
MSExchangeMTA\X500 DN
e.g.
/o=My Org/ou=My Site/cn=Configuration
/cn=My Server /cn=Microsoft MTA

You need to know what service pack and patches are installed as well for succesful database restore.

b) dir.edb which contains the configuration information. Some sort of hex editor to examine the file would be useful.
