I want to install Exchange server 2003 on windows 2000 server. I have two questions 1- For it i have a DSL connection , DNS IP address are given in the LAN TCP/IP properties. Thees are Preferred DNS and alternale addresses. I ping it and it reply me properly. Actually the DNS server is installed in my ISP. So for Exchange server should I install DNS ? My computer have 192.168.10.1 IP address and the preferd and alternate DNS is also written in TCP/IP properties. When i configure DNS and write command "nslookup" it show me Default Server: Local Host Address 127.0.0.1 > D:\>ping compaq.win2ktest.com Unknown Host compaq.win2ktest.com Please guide me. 2- Exchange Server 2003 requires to add "NNP" ," SMTP" as well "ASP.NET " so in windows 2000 server how can i find these things to install Excahge 2003. Thanks in advance. mypass

The fact that you're asking about DNS in the way you are suggests that you might not have a DNS in your Active Directory or that you don't actually have AD. Is this the case? You know you need AD for Exchange, right? And to answer your second part, install IIS and select NNTP and SMTP as additional components. They are not ticked by default but are available for selection.

hi Mate, For installing Exchange, you need to make have Active Directory, when you are having AD that means you need to have local DNS. you did nslookup and giving response as 127.0.0.1 loopback address. Check the Local Area Connections =>Properties => TCP/IP and DNs ip address. You should get your domain name to be resolved. For installing the prerequisite please see this link http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124479(EXCHG.65).aspx

thanks mark and Islam for your reply. I have AD installed in my computer and it is working fine. I have checked my DNS address which i have asked from my ISA. It is correct but when i configure my DNS ,reboot the system it show my the same thing which i mentioned above. It is not resolving. Ok another point which i think thta iam using DSL router and which i write ipconfig/all it show me the DNS IP Address 192.168.1.250. I ask my ISP they said that it is ip of the gateway and the DNS he told is not configured in the DSL router but the DNS is in my ISP,I can ping it and it works fine. So what u say should i use the ip address 192.168.50.250 in the DNS address ?

The ping command you stated in your original post doesn't resolve. Where did you get that FQDN?

As nicely as I can put it, I encourage you to go out and find someone else to perform your installation for you. If you do not understand what DNS is, you can get basic information by Google-ing (or whatever your favorite search engine is). The fact that you are testing by pinging random FQDNs indicates that you need to step back and study basic networking. Exchange can be a very complicated system that will require pre-requisite understanding if someone is going to be supporting this after installation.

You can call the server anything you want and the domain can be anything you want. You can even call it Microsoft.com if you want but I'd suggest something like server1.lab.local.

hi mate, Uemurad & Mark already guided you how to perform and that is really a very good start. When you start with a basic.. Assuming : having one vmware workstation or any lab environment as said like mark you can keep any domain name > install windows 2003 with sp2 > Give a static Ip Address (just an example) Ip address : 192.168.1.1 subnet : 255.255.255.0 Dns : 192.168.1.1 > Then run dcpromo.. while runnig dcpromo it will ask you to install DNS (optional) select that option and run it > then go to network place : Local Area Connection -Properties (by default it will show you 127.0.0.0 in the DNS column change it back to 192.168.1.1 > then go to Administrative tools -> DNS > Create a reverse lookup zone and then under forward lookup zone you will see the host record for this server, just double click it and then selece "create a PTR" > Then run ipconfig /flushdns and then ipconfig /registerdns (From the command prompt) > Then stop netlogon and restart dns service and finally start netlogon > go to command prompt : type nslookup, now it should resolve the name and ip address. This 192.168.1.1 is your local dns. hope this might help you for understanding.
