Hi, I want to install exchange server 2003.I have three machines. windows 2000 Active Directory "smith.local" (using Service pack 4) , Exchange Server2003 and DNS server . I want to install Exchange server. Some one told me that in Active Directory i should install "Scheme" and in Exchange server i should install Forest . There are 30 computers connected and i want to use "Exchange Server" only for internal e-mails. 2- Is there any need to configure DNS for local e-mails ? 3- How can i communicate computers each others ? I mean how exchange server know that AD with users is install in another computer? to add IP address in TCP/IP or there is another solution. AD IP: 192.168.1.10 Exchange Server 2003:192.168.1.11 Please guide me about it.Thanks in advance.

First - using Exchange for internal email only isn't going to work. Many people have tried and failed. You should either use Exchange for all email or not at all. Even if you configure clients to use SMTP/POP3 some email will go out through the Exchange server. As for the installation of Exchange, the install process is actually quite easy. Insert the CD, let it auto play and follow the checklist. The schema updates that you have to do are guided through on the server. However the actual installation of Exchange is only a small part of the story. There is so much more to do. If you haven't done it before then I would suggest you seek some assistance from a consultant to ensure that it is done correctly. While Exchange looks like a simple product, it isn't, and get it wrong you will lose data, have email not delivered correct or find that in a disaster situation that the recovery isn't possible. Simon.

thanks "Sembee" for the reply. I have already install exchange 2003 in windows 2000. My AD and exchange server both are in one machine which is wrong. Practically it is recommended that exchange server should be separate and AD should be in other machine. Please let me know 1st about it that how can i add scheme in AD and Forest installation (Which is in the Exchange Installation) in exchange server 2003. waiting for your kind reply. thanks in advance.

If you already have Exchange installed then you don't have to do anything with the schema or the forest because that is a one off thing. Once it is done it doesn't have to be done again. Exchange should be installed on a member server - not a domain controller. If you want to move Exchange then you need to do a swing migration. http://www.amset.info/exchange/migration.asp Simon.

thanks "Sembee" for the nice site. Actually i installed exchange 2003 for testing purpose. I want again to install in my new ready systems .One is windows 2000 server (AD) and second is windows 2000 for exchange server. Now let me know in this case where to deploy my exchange 2003. Definitely in my member server but how exchange server will know that my AD i.e domain controller is my 1st server? During installation it will check the 1st server which is my domain controller ?I hope u pick my point. thanks in advance.

If you have not installed Exchange in your production domain then you need to go through the full process from the CD again - as I have already outlined. As long as the machine that you are installing Exchange on is a member of the domain then the Exchange setup will find the domain controller. You do need to ensure that your domain is configured correctly and working. Simon.

well if i write in simple word that 1- Install windows 2000 server with service pack 4. 2- Make a AD on the machine. 3-Install windows 2000 server in the 2nd machine. 4-Make it a member of the domain. 5- Insert the Exchange 2003 Server cd and start installation. 6-During installation it will ask for the domain computer ? I hope these are the brief steps ? If any one is missing then please let me guide. regards.

Any reason you are using an eight year old product to host Exchange? Windows 2000 is very old and is now in extended support only. You should be using Windows 2003 for full functionality of Exchange 2003. The CD will not ask you for anything other than an Exchange org name. As the machine you are installing Exchange on is a member of the domain, the installer will query the domain in the background for the information that it needs. Insert the CD, let it autoplay. Select the relevant options and then follow the checklist through. Once complete, install Exchange 2003 SP2, then run Microsoft Update to ensure the machine is fully patched. Windows Update does not include updates to Exchange, so you have to upgrade. Simon.

You have to run DNS internally for Active Directory to work. However if you mean a domain name, then you should have your own domain name. You don't have to purchase these from your ISP, you can get them from a domain name registrar. Simon.

You need to go and spend some time learning how Active Directory works - a forum is not the best place to try and learn. Without a good understanding of AD and DNS you will struggle to get Exchange implemented correctly. DNS and AD are integrated - you cannot have AD without DNS. The exact role of DNS in AD is way beyond the scope of a forum post. AD DNS needs to be on domain controllers. When you try and create the domain the wizard will ask to install DNS. Simon.
