Today at 3:00 we need to prevent everyone from writing to the public store while we migrate all the data to a project management product we are implementing. However, I would still like to have one person, an administrator, have the ability to write to the database as he will be doing the migration. I looked at the permissions on the public store and it is rather complex. I didn't know if there was a simple way to just mark "everyone read only" and "administrators full access".

You can't set a store to be read only like this. 2007/2010 would probably have been OK as you could (not sure of the command set but it doesn't matter)have used PowerShell to change all the permissions but with 2003 that's not a route open to you.

Really? Oh boy, this is a pain. What about setting rights on the .edb file?

Don't dare. Exchange has rights over the file, not the users.

What about making everybody read only? With no exceptions, would that be possible?

That was the obvious answer. If you're going away from PFs then you can use ESM at the top of the tree and overwrite everything. I assumed you knew that because you'd already looked in the tree and seen it as complex. Only do this if you are willing to abandon the permissions in the PF.

Actually, I did look at the tree in ESM, but I don't see a place that would overwrite everything in the PF. I just see the security tab in the PF properties. I can't really see where they get the inheritance from. I was thinking I could just take the "everybody" entries and remove inheritance, then set them to read only. After we are done I could put inheritance back and then it would be as before. Am I looking at this too simply? Could there be a more creative solution? Like making a copy of the public folders and setting it as read only from the get go, then point everybody at that one while we work on extracting the data from the original?

In ESM you can cascade the permissions. I would ask you why you're bothering. Do you need to do this during office hours? Do you have to do this like you are asking because your users are such pains that they can't follow simple instructions like "don't use blah because we're migrating"

Haha... Yeah, I know what you mean. Yes, it looks like an official mandate will have to be put out. These guys work all the time, even weekends and after hours, but the upside to this whole thing is huge, so they will just have to bite the bullet and stay out of the public folders. We just don't know we can trust them. Thanks for all the help though, I do appreciate it. It's just that I committed to doing this because I thought it would be no big deal, now I find out different so I feel bad about it. Anyway, just for my own education, where in the tree do I go to find the root of the permissions?
