The Recovery Storage Group is identified by the msExchRestore Attribute. The msExchRestore = TRUE property tells us if a database is a recovery database. As such we cannot directly connect the mailbox from the RSG to user direcly. We have to modify this msExchRestore Attribute and make its value to Not Set so that it cannot be identified as RSG and we can connect the mailbox to the user. The Action plan here is that we will create a test user account without the mailbox, modify the msExchRestore Attribute by using ADSI Edit and the connect the mailbox of Vinay Dev Jhari from RSG to this test user account. Then we open the mailbox from the Outlook and export it to PST. Following are the detailed steps that need to be followed: 1. Create the test user account. Do not create a mailbox for the user account. 2. Reset the MsExchRestore attribute on both the Recovery Storage Group, and the recovered mailbox store using Adsiedit: Expand the Configuration Container node, and then browse the hierarchy to: DC=Domain DC=com CN=Configuration CN=Services CN=Microsoft Exchange CN=Microsoft CN=Administrative Groups CN=Administrative Group Name CN=Servers CN=ExchangeServerName CN=InformationStore CN=Recovery Storage Group Right click for Properties on the Recovery Storage Group, ensure that the checkbox for "Show Optional Attributes" is checked. Scroll down to the "MsExchRestore" attribute. Double- click the MsExchRestore attribute and check the <Not Set> parameter. Click OK, Apply, and OK to exit the properties pane. Right click the "CN=MailBox Store(ServerName) under the Recovery Storage Group, and select Properties. Ensure that the checkbox for "Show Optional Attributes" is checked. Scroll down to the "MsExchRestore" attribute. Double-click the MsExchRestore attribute and check the <Not Set> parameter. Click OK, Apply, and OK to exit the properties pane. Close the AdsiEdit mmc 3. In Exchange System Manager select the Recovery Storage Group, right click and select Refresh. Expand the Recovery Storage Group, then the mailbox store. 4. Select "Mailboxes" under the Mailbox Store, then right click the mailbox to be recovered, and select "Reconnect". The applet "Select a New User for this Mailbox" applet will appear. Enter the alias of the user you wish to associate with the recovered mailbox into the "Enter the Object Name to select" data entry field, the click "Check Name". The alias of the user should be resolved to the full display name. Click OK. You will see a pop-up stating "The operation has completed successfully".

Is there a particular reason you're not using ExMerge to create the PST after restoring the database to the RSG?

Yes, the exmerge will fail in this case as the RSG is not pointing to production database. RSG has been created on the new server that is in the production environment and is built just to restore the database. In a practical scenario, it is always good not to play around with the production database as it can effect thousands of users. However there is a workaround if we want to use Exmerge. We have to point the MsexchOrigMdb attribute on the Recovery Storage Group's store to the original production database by using ADSIEdit.

How would you restore the database on RSG until you add that database there??? and you will use RSG only when you have issues with your production database or if you have to restore some mailboxes individually.. and believe me it wont affect the production.. I have seen 100s of cases and I never faced problems!

RSG is having the database that is not the production database. The database from the restore server (blank database) itself has been added there. If the database from the production server has been mounted in RSG, then there would have been no issues at all in exmerging out the required mailbox. This is scenario in which we restored the production database on the newly built restore server's RSG that is having the blank database. I know that the RSG will not affect the production database even if we add that database there... but sometimes we need to be extra carefull..... :-)

But I dont understand the reason behind using RSG on a RECOVERY Server... IF you can create RSG on your production server then why to spend on extra hardware and make another recovery environment......... And if you do all the steps correctly then no need to be extra carefull. coz RSG takes care of everything.. coz it works on attributes which are set specially for RSG.. And one more very important thing here..... Even if you dont have a RSG and if you accidentally start restore and it will go to the production database but it will fail without overwritting your production database. Because to restore you need to check a checkbox on the database property which is " this database can be overwritten by a restore".
