We need to rename a domain with single Exchange 20007 as a member server in it. A lot of information, tools and support are available for renaming a domain with Exchange 2003, but unfortunately that is not our case. XDR-fixup is only available for Exchange 2003 and I found no references that it will fix AD with Exchange 2007.
According to Microsoft “domain rename operations are not supported when Exchange Server 2007 is installed in a Windows Server 2003 domain” (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925822), however they are mentioning one possible problem, that DSAccess component will no longer correctly query domain controllers and possible solution to it is to “specify the domain controller that DSAccess uses” manually, after a domain has been renamed.
Has anyone been doing a domain rename with Exchange 2007? Is it possible to use existing Exchange 2003 XDR-fixup tool for fixing up AD with Exchange 2007? What are other specific issues and problems that might take place after rename is done and how to deal with them?
There's a lot of steps involved in a cross-forest transition. Basically you need to build a new AD forest and move all your servers/clients/users to this new forest.
· Create new forest (NewDomain.com) · Install Exch2K7 in a new forest · Transition to this new exchange · ? What next?
According to this scenario we will end up with two forests.
Sorry for being naive, but will it be possible then to decommission Exchange in an old forest (OldDomain.com), rename an old domain to the desired name (DesiredRenamedDomainName.com), install one more Exchange in this renamed forest (oh, now I am thinking it probably not practical at all) and transition Exchange back to renamed forest with further decommissioning it from previously created NewDomain.com
Even if it is practically possible it will probably never happens in real life as being very costly solution.
Although not generally supported by MS it's actually possible to perform a transition to Exchange 2007 in a temporary Exchange resource forest, delete the Exchange org in the old forest, rename domain, install Exchange 2007 in old forest and then perform a transition back to the old forest.
I'm involved in such a transition right now, and my advise is to carefully plan what you want to do, and then test it out extensively in a lab environment first. It's definitely not an easy task!

All right, sounds like a bit of fun ahead. If no other workable solutions exists, let’s start from researching this issue more thoroughly… Will be back here, soon.

Henrik, if you pay my expenses, I volunteer to come help! -jmw
I am also in a similar scenario. I have a Exchange enabled Child Domain whose netbios name I am trying to change. Will this be possible using RENDOM utility? I am not change DNS name of my child domain.
