We have the following requirement and use case:
Requirement:
Scanners to send documents to email via trusted smtp connector.
From @abcd.com.au to @xyz.com.au

Use case:
1000s of scanners in the organisation.
Scanners authenticates as @abcd.com.au
Fails to email @xyz.com.au as it is not the abcd.com.au domain.

xyz.com.au Domain is federated with abcd.com.au Office365.
SMTP server is on premise not O365
SMTP server requires authentication or the sender to be whitelisted.
We obviously can not add every scanner to the whitelist.
We need a solution for this.
How should this be setup?

Scanners to send documents to email via trusted smtp connector. From @abcd.com.au to @xyz.com.au.
This would require below steps.
First xyz.com.au must provide Opportunistic TLS.
Second abcd.com.au must force TLS connection when connecting to xyz.com.au for encrypted message sending.
Provide details of exact failure from your mail logs because it might be due to authentication or incoming SMTP failure.

You need to create an inbound connector to accept emails from scanners. It will be a tedious job but make sure all the IPs are added in the connector.

Plus, scanner email address (from address) should have valid mailbox in exchange online.
