Hyper-V and hardware - 30.Jun.2014 9:50:45 AM

Hi all,
I am doing a "what if" for an install of exchange 2013 enterprise on server 2012 r2 standard. I would like to set it up on Hyper-V so that in the future it can be moved to newer hardware if needed, and to take advantage of Hyper-v replicas. This is for a non-profit, so money is an issue.

About 350 mailboxes. Concurrent use about 50 - 75.

Dual E5450, 3ghz (8 cores total)
32gb ram
Perc 6i 256mb cache, 3Gb/s
6 near-line SAS drives, 7.2k, 3tb each
Raid 10 - either all 6 drives with no hot spares = 9tb OR 4 drives in raid 10 for 6tb and two hot spares.

For Hyper-V guest - this is the only guest on this hardware - half the resources? 4 CPUs, 16gb ram - 2tb for Exchange and 1tb for archive mailboxes.

My Qs:

Which is better - raid 10 with all six drives or four drives in the array and two hot spares?

I have never used Near-Line drives before - what I have read on Exchange 2013 is that it can take advantage of lesser hardware - am I ok not going with straight SAS?

Is 3Gb/s OK?

Rebuild rates - if a drive dies, I am concerned about the rebuild rate for a 3tb drive - no idea on how long that might take, but that is why I am thinking of hot spares in order to start the rebuild ASAP.

Any guidance greatly appreciated,

Hi all - I noticed I got a bunch of hits but no replies - maybe I should keep it simple? Am I OK using NL-SAS drives?

If I am in your place I would have created RAID with hotspare. So no need to worry about HDD as some HDD will take some time to get it delivered.
