Greetings,

I need some assistance setting up OWA and how to access it.  Our main active directory server died last week and our backups are spotty.  Anyway, I have exchange 2000 (on server 2000) running fine, but I haven't the slightest clue how to setup OWA, what to do with IIS, or anything else related to OWA. Our firewall (watchguard firebox x500) still has its original configuration running which allowed OWA to work.  We have always used mail.domain.com as our link.  Any help is appreciated.

Actually, you don't need to do anything to set up OWA if you have a running Exchange server somewhere, because all Exchange servers are also OWA servers.  Try going to http://yourexchangeserver/exchange , and see what happens.  You may need to change a few things, but you can't tell until you try it and see what happens.

If your old OWA server was a different server, then you will need to forward incoming http traffic to the new one at the firewall.

I tried going to both ourdomain.com/exchange and mail.ourdomain.com and both come up with page cannot be displayed.  How do I start troubleshooting this?

Thanks!

Those addresses probably still point to your old server - try using the name of the working Exchange server instead.

How would I know what the name of the working exchange server is?  When I reloaded that server, I used the same name and ip addy of the old server, so nothing that was immediately configurable was changed.  Our website hasn't been working much before and is hosted offsite.  As I understand it, where ever our site is hosted has to be able to redirect something to our server here, and our IIS server has to be configured properly to receive and respond to that request correct? If so, then what do I need to look for/ask about at our hosting company, and how does our IIS server need to be setup to operate on mail.ourdomain.com?

Thanks much!
Steven

Go into Control Panel on the Exchange server, and open the System item.  Click on Computer Name, and note the value for 'Full computer name'.  That is the name that I am thinking of.  Then go to http://fullcomputername/exchange .

Hey, that worked.  This is a good thing :)  I used "servername.domain.com/exchange", now how might I go about changing it to say "mail.domain.com"?

Thanks much!

Okay, first, if you want to get rid of the /Exchange part, use this:

Okay, now the mail.domain.com part.  First, is this name already in use?

Yea, this is what was always used, and it is what our domain host is setup with.

Where is the existing mail.domain.com ?  Is it at your site, or offsite?  Does it resolve to the IP address of your router, perhaps?

The existing domain is offsite hosted by a web provider.  I don't know how it works (or what the settings are exactly), but my boss showed me yesterday that the MX field lists mail.ourdomain.com in it.  Our ip address and our firewall settings have not changed from where they were before the server crashed.

I don't think you should use mail.domain.com , since that already points somewhere else not on your LAN.  I would suggest using owa.domain.com or webmail.domain.com instead. You will need to get those names added to your DNS records (and pointing to your public IP address) by whoever maintains them for you.  Then make sure that port 80 (or 443, if you use SSL) is forwarded to your OWA server at the firewall.
