I am using Exchange 2003 SP2 and Exchange Internet Message Filtering. Generally, IMF works fine (for a freebie) although it does occasionally intercept messages that are sent from one internal user to another (I archive all messages that IMF intercepts). IMF obviously determines these messages as borderline spam. Is there any way that I can configure IMF and/or Exchange to bypass the check against internal messages from/to users in my domain?

It shouldn't be touching internal messages unless the users are sending via SMTP. IMF sits on the SMTP stack, so internal, Outlook to Outlook, pure MAPI messages shouldn't be touched. Therefore the question is - how are the users sending email? MAPI or SMTP? Simon.

Hi Simon Thanks for the reply. You may something there. The 'internal' emails are created by a third-party application, which is generating SMTP messages instead of MAPI. Any further thoughts on how to prevent IMF from intercepting them?

There is your problem. The messages are coming in via SMTP, so will be scanned. A little different from users sending the messages. There is no white listing functionality in IMF. It is very basic in that regard. What I have suggested in the past when this has been a problem with internal SMTP sending is to put a second IP address on to the server, then add an additional SMTP virtual server. Ensure that the default SMTP VS IS bound to a specific IP addresses beforehand - it will be set to all unassigned by default. Then on the new SMTP VS do not select IMF to be enabled. If IMF isn't enabled then it cannot block the messages. The new SMTP VS does not need an external IP address. Simon.

Thanks for that Simon. I know that IMF is a pretty basic product, so long term I may have to look at a more sophisticated product that includes whitelisting, i.e. GFI MailEssentials. Thanks again for your help on this one.
