We had a couple of Server Crashes.

1st Crash was due to Read Errors on Disk.  After that all MS Exchange Databases Mounted Successfully and all looked to be good.
Backup had just started and completed the 1st of 20 mailstores and was on 2nd mailstore.

Then another crash at 12:15 am.... This time three Storage Groups did not mount their Mailstores so 15 stores would not mount due to dirty shutdown state.

After 18 hours of doing Restores and roll in the logs we are back up.

We did a update of the Firmware on the HardDrives (raid 5)

Then tried a backup and it failed with 474 Events  -1018  Code - Basically Read Errors.  This was while the Raid 5 Array was resynching the disk.

Now that the Raid 5 Array is in sync we are going for another backup tonight.

So the question is this:

1.  Is there anyway in MS Exchange to take the databases offline (Dismount Them) and then get a file backup and some command in exchange to purge the Transaction Logs  and be good ?   or is the Backup software the only thing that can purge the logs.

Thanks,
david

hi,

As i can think - backup software as the ability to purge the log
if you want to take file level backup then only option remaining is dismount the database which will make the database clean shutdown and copy the database and move all the log files to some other location.
