We rebooted server after 2 windows updates that should not have effected the exchange services. First all services were running, but no one coudl connect through outlook. Our exchange server is a DC also and a GC itself. This was done before I started here. I hate that it is a DC. From Exchange 2003 notes MSFT recommends it be GC if it is a DC. After 3 reboots, the info store and MTA service woudl not start. Yesterday I started to lean towards that, because when it was Exchange 2000 we had issues with Symantec. The reason I thought this was at first MTA, Routing, Mgmt and Info store were running. SMTP was running. I could get to my mailbox through OWA on the Exchange server. Now from any workstaion neither OWA nor Outlook would work. After the 3rd reboot the exchange services would not start. I did go in and switch the 1 to a 0 under VirusScan on MSExchangeIS, after the change, I rebooted and the Info Store wouldn't start. There were other errors in events, some pointed to a DNS issue and it not able to find a GC. I checked DNS and the records there were right. Event Type: Error Event Source: MSExchangeIS Event Category: General Event ID: 1121 Date: 1/12/2006 Time: 3:04:59 PM User: N/A Computer: HUSAEXCHANGE Description: Error 0x80004005 connecting to the Microsoft Active Directory. For more information, click http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp. Event Type: Error Event Source: MSExchangeIS Event Category: General Event ID: 5000 Date: 1/12/2006 Time: 3:04:59 PM User: N/A Computer: HUSAEXCHANGE Description: Unable to initialize the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service. - Error 0x80004005. For more information, click http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp. I am going to reboot today and see that all services start themselves. We got Exchange 2003 to run by manually starting the services. Thanks for those links. I looked at 2 of those yesterday.

hey, It seems that your exchange box is unable to find a DC/GC. i would advise you to run a tool called policytest.exe (Would be found in your E2k SP CD --- support --- utils --- i386 --- policytest.exe ) Drag it down to your command prompt and hit enter. View the result and check for a portion where it talks about Rights (It would be in the last line) If you have "another" DC and if it displays SeSecurityPrivilige right found Follow the steps mentioned here :- 1. Open Exchange System Manager 2. Go to properties of the Server object 3. Go to the Directory Access tab 4. Drop down the box and change the selection to Configuration Domain Controller 4. Uncheck the box that says "Automatically discover servers" 5. Select Add, and browse to a DC other than the one that was there previously. click ok to exit. However, if you do not have another DC with those rights found.. Run setup /domainprep on all DC (you need to be logged onto with membership to Exchange Domain Server Group -----preferrably log in with Administrator A/c) Once done restart all services.....It should bring a smile on your face.
