Exchange 2000 on 2000 server
Until recently our server woked fine.
Problem: The only way we can get it to work is to disable the information store services and then start it after the server is up. If you leave it on automatic then the server will hang and the service will say starting forever.

Any 3rd party antispam/virus software which hooks into the Information Store on the Server?
I've with some products/servers seen issues where the Information Store couldn't start during a reboot, the solution was to stop the service related to 3rd party software, then start the Information Store and then the 3rd party software service (again).
At least this was the solution until a bugifx was released.

Okay try to stop and set the GFI services to manual (through Administrative Tools > Services) then reboot the server to see if the Information Store still hangs, if it doesn't you might want to check you're running with the lastest build of each GFI product.

The only thing in the application event logs are: MSExchangeFBPublish errors 8197
Just to be clear: When exchange boots up the information stores service hangs and says starting. If I disable that service and reboot the server then manualy start the information store service everything is fine. This is quite the pain because the when you hit apply to changes everything freezes and I have to reboot the server and hope that the disable went through.

There is no solution, I think it is a system password problem but where to change the system password in 2000 server/exchange is impossible to find.

Hi,
As i have gone through the problem you are facing with the information store it is in starting mode and u are not able to do any thing.
Please follow the under mentionmed steps :
> As information store is in starting state / hang state there is a possible reason of the corruption of databse files of information stores.
> the .edb, .stm files have created certian problem .
> please first dismount the store from exchange.
> run the eseutil command with /d / g switch.
> run isinteg command for both .edb and .stm files.
> after that please mount the stores and check for the information stores services while it is started or not.
i hope this will solve the problem from exchange .

Hello. I have the same problem with my exchange now. I am waiting for a weekend for reparing the database. Can somebody tell me if eseutil was helpful with this problem or not?
And may be somebody know why does this situation occur?
Thanks.

1. The store is corrupt.
eseutil is the way...
You may also face very slow logins to your profile, might take ages in applying computer settings after you supply user name and pwd.
solution.
1. set the IS service to manual. 2. Set do not mount store at startup 3. start IS 4. Mount each store.
This will help you identify the corrupt store. 5. Run Eseutil/d [corrupt store.edb]
before you do this, stop all services and copy the files to an alternate location.
This should fix it

May be you know: why does this corruption take place? May be very large mailbox store or large mailboxes?
Thanks for help!

Basically 5 things.
1. Erratic size of the mailboxes. 2. Deleted items retention period 3. Backup windows and the Online defragmentation window clashes with each other (overlaps) 4. Too many mailbox movements 5. The disk holding the Exchange logs is strained on IOPS.

Thanks for your answers but nothing helps me! :-(
So what i did: Created a new Storage group and moved all mailboxes from old storage group to a new one. Deleted old mailbox storage - restart server and nothing! A got the same situation - "Information Store service is starting" and it takes about an hour to logon to the server. I don't know what to do else... If anyone know please answer... Thank you. Try this.
1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK. 3. In Registry Editor, locate the following subkey in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\VirusScan 4. In the right pane, double-click Enabled. 5. Click Decimal, type 0 in the Value data box, and then click OK. 6. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor. 7. Start the Information Store.
