I have a new server and I am installing MS Exchange 2007 on this.
I have had an old server that does have it and from what I remember, installation was smooth.

The only difference is that the new server is WS2008R2 where as the old one is WS2008

both Enterprise SKU and I am installing on the server itself which is also a DC (this is intentional)

During installation, it failed saying that the Transport layer (I think this was it) could not be started. The event log said that it couldnt contact the domain controller - not sure how since the server is a DC

I've just had to wipe the system clean and start afresh again but wondering what else am I missing in terms of preping the system?

its a simple Exchange server - no clustering or joining onto any other domains at all. No edge transport needed.

Thanks

See http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesoftwareupdate/thread/1f0be2c7-0de0-492a-9cfd-18cdc5891bc8/ and check your pre-requisites. Are you using the right Exchange media, ie SP3?

Mark its funny because I just saw that link :-)

Thanks.

Is there a way to slipstream SP3 into the RTM SP1 Exchange 2007? or just execute SP3 and it should be the same to insall Exchange 2007 (with SP3)?

There is no slipstreaming. Each SP is the full monty so throw everything away except the SP3 binaries and install those. Doneski.

Check your Windows pre-reqs beforehand though and you ought to be ok.

Much appreciated Mark!

I wish I could say I could see you at the summit, if you are going, but unfortunately did not get renewed for my MVP

Thanks

Sorry, a little OT

I installed AD CS (Certificate Services) after doing dcpromo.

I get an error already without doing anything after the reboot that the AD could not be contacted?

"Could not connect to the Active Directory. Active Directory Certificate Services will retry when processing requires Active Directory access."

my FQDN was set to: xxx.local

*may* have fixed it. added the entry in the hosts file to point to itself.

You shouldn't need to do that. What are your DnS settings?

good point - I forgot to add the external DNS entry in my network connection settings as the alternate DNS to use.

but as for the DNS entry itself (DNS Manager) - all defaults

Just a heads up in regards to the installation - it went smooth using the SP3. Thanks for that

next step... migration of the database
