I need help badly here. Been working on this for 3 days straight and I can't find any relevant information...

I'm setting up a lab environment to replicate a client's production environment, here's the configuration.

One root domain (lab.org) and one child domain (child.lab.org)

Both domains run Windows 2003 32bits, latest updates/service packs, and the AD is in native mode.

The child.lab.org already has Exchange 2003 installed and working (in native mode)

I am now trying to add Exchange 2007 (under Windows 2008 64bits) to the child.lab.org domain.

On lab.org (the root), using the enterprise admin account, I ran the prepareschema, preparealldomains tasks. I get an error that says it can't find the "Recipient Update Service" in the root domain, which is normal I think, as there is no exchange organization in the root.

I then proceed to run the setup of Exchange 2007 SP1 on a server in the child.lab.org domain.

Installation fails health check because it needs to update the schema (which was done as far as I know). I added the child domain's administrator account to the Enterprise admin and schema admin groups in the lab.org domain and I get the same problems (I even get a warning that I don't have proper credentials, even though gpresult shows that I'm a member of both required groups).

I'm completely lost here. Can someone help me out?

Oh and I am NOT in any way an Exchange expert. I'm working on a monitoring solution for the client and I need to set this up to test monitoring of Exchange (both 2003 and 2007).

In the root "lab.org" domain, I ran setup /pl.

The error, according to what I've read should be ignored as there is no RUS in the root domain.

So as far as I can see, the preparations for the root domain all worked fine.

There is an error in the event log though, every time I run the tool.

In the child domain "child.lab.org", I then run the DomainPrep task.

I noticed it's still complaining about the forest root lab.org, even though I'm running this in the child domain... But it worked! So as far as I can see, everything should install properly. But it doesn't... Using the GUI, I try to install Exchange on the Windows 2008 64 bits, that is part of the child domain. (I'm running all this under Vmware ESX).

hi mate,

I guess you are trying to install exchange 2007 on child domain where we have exchagne 2003.

Have you tried running this command : setup /pl:<FQDN of domain you want to prepare
2) Exchange 2003 should be in native mode - i guess you did it.?

Note : make sure you are running those command for the domain where you want your exchange 2007 to be installed

hi mate,
as per the log it is clearly informing that schema is not updated, so you try below steps:
try to run all the prerequisite command from the schema master server itself.
like /pl, /ad along with FQDN
Note : While running this on schema master, you need to download and run 32 bit exchange 2007 sp1. and then try to install 64 bit edition on child domain.

Somehow it keeps saying that but everytime I run the prepareschema I get a success message. Who's lying? The prepschema or the setup? :)

Hiya chap - can you confirm the following sequence has been used -
Logon with an account which has the following rights:

Enterprise Admin
Schema Admin
Domain Admin (both parent and child)
Administrator (both parent and child)

Run (in the parent domain):

Setup /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions
Setup /PrepareSchema
Setup /PrepareDomain

Allow for replication to take place - Parent and Child domains share a common schema - therefore you should not have to run PrepareSchema in the child domain

Run - in the Child Domain:

Setup /PrepareAD

If this should fail - check that the schema master can be "pinged" via the FQDN from a domain controller in the Child domain.

Obviously it's not in the same domain as the schema master, it's in the child domain. How do I go around this?

Can you ping the FQDN of the Schema Master from a DC in the child domain - what happens if you run DCDIAG from the child domain?

No communication problems at all. Pings just fine both ways all DCs.

DCDiag passes every test...

Its not recommended but might help you out, have you transfered the Schema Master role to a DC in the child domain?

Yeah I saw that as one workaround someone did but I find it kind of extreme. I don't mind doing it in a lab but moving stuff around in production isn't my favorite thing ;)

I'd rather come up with the real solution to this (i.e. understand WHY it's behaving like this) as it makes no sense.

Thing is, it's lab for now, but the procedure to install it will be done in production later, that's why I'm looking for a real solution.

Post #3 :) I ran it and it worked fine. Since the problem seems to be seeing the schema, I don't think the Exchange Org Admins group will have any relevance?

There are no exchange installations in the parent, so the only groups are Exchange Domain Servers and Exchange Enterprise Servers, in AD.

From some of the research that I have done placing the account in the group fixed it for one person - sorry for missing post 3. Is it worth a try just to rule it out?

A coworker figured it out... Problem was me ;)

The installation files of Exchange 64 bits is SP1. The 32 bits version I used to run on the DC was NOT SP1... I downloaded the files from Microsoft and unpacked the wrong one. Jeez...

Well lesson learned. in a mixed 32/64 bits, you need both versions to do the install and make sure they are at the same service pack level.
