Hi ESF
I try an explain my problem in short terms.
Dead Win2K Domain controller. No backup Useraccounts(SID) lost from the domain. Dead disk on Exchhange2000SP2. No backup I know, i know, deep trouble. Only thing surviving is is priv1.edb, and Priv1.stm.
Tried to install new server with /disasterrecovery. But i cant mount the store. Isinteg and ESEutil say databas is intact, and OK.
Is there a tool/Utility to extract a single mailbox from these 2 files ???
Is it possible AT ALL, to extract anything from these 2 files ?
Best Regards Lars Juliussen, Denmark

I know this is a bit dated, but it still may be of use if you are trying to recover data. This is what you can do:
1. Build a new Windows 2000 server in a NEW FOREST. Give it the same NetBIOS name as the original server. 2. Install Exchange 2000 server on this server. Make sure that the Organization name is the same as the old server. Install SP2 (because that's what version the database thinks you're using). 3. Ensure that the Administrative Groups, Storage Groups, and mailstores are configured with the same names. 4. Dismount the mailstore(s). The one we're concerned about is the one that we're getting data back from. 5. Move your backups into the directory where the mailstores were. 6. On the properties of the mail store, change the location of the database and streaming files to the location of your backups. 7. Mount the stores. 8. Use mbconn on the Exchange 2000 server CD to build an LDIF file from the names in the Information store. 9. Import that text file into Active Directory using ldifde. 10. Use mbconn to reconnect the mailboxes with the user accounts. 11. Exmerge the mailboxes you need. Alternately, you can reset the passwords for the accounts whose mail you need, add a workstation to your new forest/domain (do NOT install Outlook on the server), log on as the user whose mail you want to recover, and connect to the Exchange server. Your data should be available.
If you need help, feel free to send me a private message. I've done this many times in the lab with production data developing disaster recovery plans.

is there any other way that would be pretty simple. Such as. Have a second server same hardware and all. Load exchage on it, call it the same name, and same config. Turn that off. Do a backup on the orginal server each night. THen if Server 1 dies (Hard Drive) you can fire up the second server, restore from backup tape and be done?
Just a thought.

Yes, you can. That's definitely a good idea, if you can spare the hardware.
In the case of the original post, however, he didn't have any Active Directory backups. Though he'd be able to save the mailboxes with Exmerge, he wouldn't have any basis for a new network.
While he needed the data from the mailboxes, which exmerging the mailboxes out would provide, which, he indicated that the didn't have any AD backups, either. That means, once he got those mailboxes out, he still would have a down network with no one able to log on. He would still have to build a new forest and a new exchange server, and if was going to re-use his current hardware, he would have wasted many hours just exmerging data out.
was attempting to provide a framework for resolving his dilemma.
